Sewing Machine is actually listed on the TSA site.
Australia has a searchable site as well. Sewing machine is missing, 'electrical appliances' is probably the most suitable result.

Can you take a sewing machine through domestic airport security (ex Adl) ....it meets QFs carryone allowance (weight). Obviously there is the attached needle.Thanks

Re the topic. We have taken quite a few sewing machines in carry on to Fiji and have had no issues at all. Not quite as per the original question but still a data point.
