Carry on Shame

A lot of good that is " processed" (cooked) is generally ok. My mum brings her favorite Vogel bred from NZ when she visits.

I thought about this long and hard and feel that small items which people place in overhead bins irritates me, it takes up generally quite valuable space especially if that person has already thrown up there their nice large suitcase too. Put small items under the seat in front of you, not that hard really.

I have had to change my boarding method in many countries because of the excess baggage people are carrying on. I use to board as it was announced from the lounge(s) but now I watch the time and get there early just to store my bag in a location close to me. And the pattern of Y passengers stuffing their bags in J as they walk down to the back is getting worse especially on the 737/32X type aircraft. I travel with one carry-on but the BKK to KUL flight the other day a family of four had 11 bags between them, which I said to the next passenger that I'd hate to see how much checked baggage they had!!!

VX charged me $US25 to check my bag for MCO-LAX. Looking at what people tried to take on my bag was about 2/3 the average carry on size. And they all have at least two large bags even though they say "one carry-on item (roll-on bag) and one personal item such as a laptop bag". They nearly all have these huge roll-on bags (bigger than allowed in Aus plus a backpack of a size to fit a small child. On this flight the cool and groovy staff said the flight was "very full" (as opposed to 'full') and people could leave their bags at the gate and they'd take them. So they bypassed the fee. More fool me.

I should have got some photos.

So what you're saying someone who pays a fee to check luggage and brings a small backpack on is not entitled to leg room, but someone who brings a huge wheel aboard on and does not check luggage is entitled to legroom.

Having said that, even as as serial late boarder in the US, I've travelled with a small backpack or if HLO a slightly larger backpack, and never had to put them under seat in front, simply because they are not rigid framed can easily fit into odd spaces in oh lockers, even in Y.

Ohhhh, I think if I was placing my single airline approved bag into a full overhead and there was a box of KK's staring back at me....well, I am just a little uncertain how I might handle that one.;)

My gripe is the younger generation wearing backpacks ,which seem to be getting bigger , boarding with them on their backs !!! I have lost count of how many times I have been side swiped by one of these when the person has no idea where they are sitting ! Wham! Carry the blasted thing in front of you!!!! Your vision is therefore filled with the said backpack and you have complete control over it.

That's a lovely practice, which is occasionally countered by the crew asking if anyone owns the bag (which of course, the people around it don't), and then having it removed.

I think I should have been clearer in my post; I get annoyed at people who put their backpack/handbag/Krispy kreme plus their massive suitcase up there. Usually one item per person is cool and anything more goes under the seats, so if all you have brought is a backpack and use the overhead bins ... that's cool Imo.

Well, they probably had no checked luggage!

It's not the multitude of bags as carry in the overhead lockers that upsets me so much (yay for priority boarding!) as the amount of time these people take to get through security, particularly in the US! You'd think they'd never travelled before and didn't know why there was so much screening. Drives me nuts! And gee I wish I could get TSA-prechecked! I don't know how those TSA people keep their sanity!

The next change will be the size of the bags / suitcase you check in... Recently went into a specialist luggage store, and was gobsmacked by the number of cases being sold that are larger than allowed by QF.

Oh yes, that is another classic, people getting to security checks then having to dig their passport or boarding pass out; or "so I cannot bring a litre of water through"; or the one who buries their laptop in the middle of their bag and takes 5 minutes to dig it out; or do I need to take my mobile out of my pocket; etc, etc, worse one I have ever found was East Midlands...

And I would make a good bet that the 11 carry on bag family also had checked baggage.... Part of being a frequent flyer.....

My personal favourite is people who are knocked back at the gate with a clearly oversize bag claiming that "they let me take it onboard on the way up" which is clearly BS as it's still got the thermal bag tag on it from the forward journey indicating it was definitely checked luggage and the offendees didn't have the foresight to remove it before their return flight.

I just end up walking around them...

As for carry on bags, here's one for the "personal item goes under the seat in front" camp. What's peoples opinion on a putting both one's carry on bag (for example a small duffle bag) in the overhead and the personal item (duty free or laptop bag) on top of the duffle. So really only taking the footprint of one bag in the bin. Is that acceptable to you?

Absolutely, I've done it many times. I've often put my coat jacket on top, although the last trip (a 45 dayer!) I bought an original Panama hat from Peru which sat "on top" so it didn't get squashed!

For the record. I believe that if it doesn't go "on top" it should probably be under the seat in front of you.

My usual carry on bag and personal item/ laptop shoulder bag can stand up on their bottom edge in the same footprint as a wheelie bag. I feel perfectly justified in not putting one on top of the other.

I'm astounded by people who throw in their laptop bag to take the largest possible footprint and don't stand their bags up
