Am looking at new carry on luggage for December and like the look of July. The dimensions are 54cm H x 36cm W x 22cm D (24.5cm D when expanded). But it seems this exceeds the dimensions. Flying in J so have been searching Dr google but hoping for first hand experience here. July is popular amongst flyers so seems strange it's out of limits.

I used the Northface Base Camp Duffel - XS for years as my carry on. 970 grams . Together with a sling for camera Ipad etc .

I need a roller case though. Looked at backpacks that open as a suitcase but couldn't find a suitable one. I lose too much having to dig down.

Who are you flying with. Expanded its less than the single bag economy carry on allowance for Qantas (115cm) and only a bit over the J and F bag + garment bag allowance (105cm). I wouldn't be concerned in the least about that. Qatar J and F is 50x37x25cms - total still over the total expanded dimension of July. Or am I misunderstanding?

Not misunderstanding. July luggage contacted me and also said about the 115 thing too. Travelling Emirates. And their luggage information is driving me crazy. 😂 It only mentions each dimension not total dimension. It's that 20cm thing that's the problem. July is 22.

Flying J wide body they are never harsh on me, especially international. I am usually 1 carry on like a samsonite 55cm roller plus a Tumi garment bag.

I suspect you will never have an issue with that 22cm in J or even in Y in any wide-body, however query whether you will ever use the expanda feature as that might noticeably take it over the limit when deployed. There is also a weight penalty to the expanda version over the non-expanda version, and that would be the deciding factor for me (ie, it incurs a weight penalty for a feature you are not going to or cannot use). Empty case weight is crucial for hand luggage.

Yes, totally agree. I have both in my 'basket' but the expansion part really pushes it. There is also a super light one in their range that meets all the measures but thinking that might restrict me too much. Sigh. I usually buy them from KMart 😂but now I want something better.

The thing I like about one of the versions is the zip compartment on both sides. I usually seem to open up on the strap side and everything falls out. Apparently they are somewhat compression in function as well. And then the colours are fab 😂

I'm learning towards a collapsible carry-on with 2 (Flex Vega) or 4 wheels (Flex 360 Spinner) from Rollink (Rollink Collapsible Luggage) to replace an ageing fabric 2-wheeler that folds flat if needed (have had to consolidate luggage in the past!) Originally received as a gift-with-purchase freebie, my wheelie friend has done many, many miles and been checked-in on occasions but really needs a rest now. Often used in conjunction with standard carry-on (I don't carry a handbag or backpack).

Not sure if it is mentioned on the July website but the code JULY30 will get you $30 off upto the 21st of July
It wasn’t so Thankyou for that!

The other part of me wants just a backpack that opens like a suitcase. First world problems. I do have a lightweight back back, nylon, that is my personal bag.

That’s quite interesting too!

They look interesting but my last carry on was a Samsonite that weights 1.75kg and I like as light a case as possible

Have a look at Kathmandu Litehaul 38L. That is my HLO for leisure travel.
I'd love a lightweight backpack with wheels - dreaming I know but sometimes you don't want to drag a case and sometimes you don't want to lug it around on your back

Agree with the weight thing completely... it's the fold-flat design I have found really useful in the past. Particularly in confined spaces eg under-bunk bag stowage on a sailing yacht for example and of course back home, after the adventure is over :) Old-friend wheelie balanced nicely sideways on top of my standard 4-wheeler cabin bag for easy movement. Trip duration & purpose generally determines which bag/s join the party 😎
