Carry-on 50 vs 55cm

I was just wondering what people's experiences are with 55cm carry-ons. They don't meet the size limits for domestic, but is that often enforced ?

Also, does haveing a branded bag (i.e. QANTAS) give you more leeway on that airline? Would they let it pass because its their bag ?

I currently have a 10 year old 50cm Samsonite. Its still going strong, however I could do with a little more room, but not at the expense of having to check my bag in.

When your bag is in the overhead wheels first is there 5cm left?

If not your bag will have to go in sideways and take up more overhead room. I.e. less space for others.

Funnily enough though, most of my international travel is short haul, so its small planes with the same size overhead bins i'd get flying to any capital in Oz.. so that issue happens anyway..

Jetstar and Qantas will both accept a 55cm case for Domestic if it is your only cabin baggage, here are the dimensions:
Qantas/JetStar Domestic: Total dimensions of 115cm comprised of Height: 56cm Width: 36cm Depth: 23cm (apart from Dash 8, Brindabella, Olympic Dam services)
