Card users pay dearly

Whilst my folks rarely buy from a butcher (instead they get meat at the supermarket), it is amazing that there are butchers who accept Amex and/or Diners for payment.

I hope he keeps it up if and when the credit card company (or the bank) decides that the honeymoon rate is over. (This is the step which usually kills off acceptance.)

Yep he has seen an increase in business and needs all the help he can get to fight against Woolies and the rest of them.

Out of my three local shopping centres:
All have 1 butcher who accepts Amex.
1 fruit shop accepts Amex

All with no min spend or surcharge

Diners Club....in Australia.

Very, very rarely do l see a "DC Accepted" sign. Maybe DJ can launch a DJ-Diners Club-Coles (re-branded Fly-buys?) points earning card to take on the QF/Woolies/Fuel juggernaut?

About a year ago I reported (here and to Amex) the Retravision store in Traralgon as having a 6% surcharge for Amex.

I went in there again for the first time recently and amazing they still charge 6%. I did a quick lap of the store and when approached I asked the SA to tell the owner (whom I know) that so long as they have a 6% charge I will not be back.

The ACCC should really investigate any business that charges more than the merchant fee as a credit card surcharge.

6% is the highest I have heard of (excluding CabCharge), I thought 5% was the record.

I have reported to Amex many hundreds of business for either surcharging or not accepting Amex.

In theory they get a call from an "Amex Rep" to try to get them to accept Amex or stop surcharging:

Out of the hundreds I have reported
2 now accept Amex
1 stopped surcharging
The other 200+ simply declined to accept it

I don't bother anymore and simply shop where it's accepted and not surcharged

Is there anything you can't buy using your Amex and/or without surcharge?

Otherwise, you would be a perfect case for someone that doesn't need a Visa or Mastercard (or even cash...)?

I use the ATM about 4 times a year..... 2 of these times are during Winter when I am up in the ski fields and lots of places only take cash.... Then about 2 other times during the year for a few hundred $$.

The only bill I have at home is the water bill where I have to use VISA, and and the council rates for one of my rentals.

Every other bill/utility is Amex :)

I usually take my own food to work, but when I eat out it's at a restaurant that accepts Amex or Nando's :)

Unfortunatley, there is no legal restriction on what a merchant may surcharge, as the RBA decided that the cost of enforcing such a rule was too high.
