We were travelling from Naples to Edinburgh on a recent European trip with British Airways and had a pretty tight connection in Gatwick. We weren't overly amazed when the car seat didn't appear at the carousel or oversized luggage bay.
What we were pleasantly surprised by was the instant offer of a free replacement seat to use on our onward journey. We were told to keep (or donate to charity) the free seat after picking up the original one when we came back to the airport three days later.
All done with efficiency and a smile by the Menzies staff who dealt with the BA luggage. They noticed our SG/OWS status but I don't think it made a difference
I've no idea if this is standard procedure but seemed very good to us (and I'm sure wouldn't have happened on Easijet)
