Car Rental Tips

Interesting article. Much of the article is about reducing the upfront purchase price.
I’m winding up a 3 month North American trip and can’t express how fortunate it was that I booked direct with a major car company and paid for the loss and damage waiver.

I wrecked a car with only 3,000 miles on the clock and they handed over a replacement at no cost and minimal questions.

No doubt I could have saved a penny with a 3rd party, but I bet it would have cost more money and time after an accident.

That’s a great point — peace of mind is worth the extra cost, especially when things go wrong. Glad it worked out smoothly for you!

A Q for regular Avis Car Rental rentalers - if you require a car say in 8mths time how are in advance would you recommend booking?

AFAIK, no harm in booking as soon as possible. Certainly some popular venues will 'sell out' of 'popular' models before 6 months. You can the cancel without cost later and either re-book, or go somewhere else.

Agreed. Book now and check for better price down the track.

If it’s not a pre-pay booking - why wouldn’t just book ASAP?

I have access to corp rates and they’re generally the same $ booking a week/days out or 12mths for airport pickups. BUT, as mentioned earlier, smaller City franchises can “sell out” very quickly.

Jeez, that's expensive. I'd pay way less than half that, with full insurance. Not with Avis, but another "reputable" provider. Surely nobody would pay those rates.

They do. Especially the older non frequently traveled. My old folks booked a car hire for the exact same place for a week was like $1500. I naturally had a heart attack, canceled it, added a promo code and cut $1000 off.

I’ve been to Port Douglas in July the last 3 years, and noticed this year car hire from CNS had gone through the roof.
We resorted to using a shuttle service CNS to Port Douglas, $220 return for two this year. Will do the same next year also.
There are several companies that run shuttle services from CNS - we used Excellence coaches

The last few rentals domestically I have gone through Airport Car Rentals who sell third party.

Same car same provider, 9/10 better price.
