car rental in new zealand

Same here. We always use Apex in NZ and occasionally here.
Are APEX on airport at AKL? Or do you need to take a shuttle?;Used ACE once there. Nothing wrong with the car but the transfer and waiting for bus etc was hopeless.

I think almost all Apex's are off airport locations.

From recollection, even "on airport" companies are not really that on airport (such as Hertz).

If wanting to cross Cook Strait (North Island ~ South Island[the mainland]) check carefully if doing a one way hire.
Some will want you want you to swap cars at Wellington ~ Picton. Others will allow and some do not allow.
With one way hire are always surplus of cars at southern depots. Many people drive south and fly north.

You may pay a premium to rent from the airport. Renting from a city location may be a lot less, for the small cost of a taxi/uber from the airport to the rental car location.

+1 for Snap Rentals. In my research they were the only company that leased to me as a Provisional license holder, but even for those with a full license they seem to have one of the best prices in Auckland. I've booked with them directly and through Amex portal and have found the prices to be quite competitive.

Last time I rented a Corolla Cross for $29/day + $34/day for their P plate cover (which includes their 0 excess insurance). They charge a $15.75 premium location fee for AKL but do offer an on-demand shuttle service to their location which is short 5 minute drive away.
Although not specifically mentioned on the website the car came with wired CarPlay which was very useful.

I haven't done it before but last time the couple next to me did a one-way hire; I believe there is a slightly higher fee for that. They have a decently presented website and reply relatively quickly on email.
