Hello all...
I'm used to hiring a car through any of the major companies here when I'm on business interstate. I'm used to getting a decent sized car (Commodore or similar) for anywhere between $80-120.

Business further afield in France early next year - looking at car hire. For the same mid-sized car range, I'm looking at almost $300 for just one day! Is this just because it's Europe and they can charge through the nose?

Cheers

DrGuinness,

Welcome to AFF.

I'm sure there are better options and people will post them. I have no personal experience with France but have you looked at Netflights or Arguscarhire.

They tend to have very competitive rates and with all insurances etc included. I cannot be any more specific without more information.

I have been looking at possible European rentals next year and thanks to a tip on AFF have been looking at www.avis.co.uk
A week in a Citroen C5 was ~$A400 from paris if paid now,$A450 if paid at end of rental and included fees and insurance.
I think some of the other companies UK sites may be cheaper.

Dr Guiness...what length rental are you looking at? There may be other options to standard rental if you are looking at anything over 21 days.

Unfortunately larger Car rentals in Europe can be expensive, as generally Europeans tend to use smaller cars than we are used to in Australia.

Sixt is always worth a look....got a great deal on a Mercedes with them at less than A$90 per day.

The other great place to compare live feed rates is vroomvroomvroom.com.au

Also note that vehicles with Automatic Transmissions can be typically $100+ more per day to hire than manuals of a similar type.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

Thanks all for your help... I only need the car for one day as I'm visiting a client who has no train or bus access! Hiring over a few days looks alright, but just one day looks a bit steep. I'll try all your suggestions above and see what pops up!

Which is why, as a frequent visitor to France for a few months at a time I never drive. That and the fact I don't get along all that well with a clutch.

When driving a manual everyone knows I am an Aussie due to the kangaroo hops!:D:oops:
