Just attempted to browse to AFF using the Virgin lounge wifi in Brisbane. Received the following message:

[h=2]vBulletin Message[/h]Sorry. The administrator has banned your IP address. To contact the administrator click here

Switched straight to the 4G dongle. All good now. Didn't click to contact the administrator (whoops)...

Obviously, the administrator doesn't like people browsing from the lounge. Best guess is that some inappropriate messages were posted from there.

I guess, but wouldn't you normally just ban the user?

Depends on the type of abuse... Another member here had a similar issue in the Melbourne DJ lounge yesterday. Admin may also be using automated lists to provide blocking (to prevent spam and other abuse). Virgin's lounge IPs may be on them.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

AFF Supporters can remove this and all advertisements

You are both probably right.

We have had a spate of spam in the last few days and maybe support/admin or a vBulletin auto process has blocked the source IP.

Moderators can choose between "Delete posts" or "Delete posts as SPAM" - that latter may do such additional things as automatically blocking IP's.

Assuming some came from a DJ IP, that is quite worrying.

Posted on a wing and a prayer ...

Depending on the circumstances we will ban the user and/or block the IP address. Please PM me the IP address of the Lounge so that I can investigate. Thanks and apologies for the inconvenience

As it happens one of our moderators happens to be at Brisbane airport now! He just sent through the IP address and yes, it was blocked. I have removed it from the blacklist, so all should be good now!!

Hows that for service, the AFF mode team now offer an SLA of under 2 hours to resolve the problem :)

Maybe Virgin should restrict access to the lounge wifi to people actually inside the lounge. From both Sydney and Brisbane you can access Virgin's lounge WiFi while standing in the foodcourt (syd) and gate adjacent to the lounge (bne). ;) Any spam coming from that IP address may not necessarily be from someone inside the lounge itself. Could be any random individual. And judging by the congregation of backpackers near the Mel lounge I rather suspect the same is true there too. How hard can it be to log the MAC address of devices brought into the lounge for the purposes of wifi access? Surely some genius has written an app to do exactly this. Or maybe just have a login based on your PNR on your boarding pass? Macca's free wifi is so tight can can't even get reception standing on the outside of the building. Chat to them...;)

Such a restriction would actually be in breach of ACMAs laws depending on how its done, in reality its hard to do without very good planning and I suspect the effort would not be worth the result!

Really its against the law to restrict wifi access to only persons intended? what about the good old pswd technique? Algorithm generated number code handed out at lounge entry?

That doesn't match my experience. My brother happily sitting in the car park outside a closed
Macca's at midnight to skype to his wife springs to mind.

Where's that? My local has zero reception unless you are parked in the middle of their dining room.

What a PITA that is when its in place, and note I said "depending on how its done". Again, not worth the effort, BTW Maccas restrict WIFI access for a difference reason that has nothing to do with malicious activity by its users.
