Cancelling QF flight bookings made with Amex Travel Credits

Has anyone attempted to get a credit for the Amex Velocity free flight benefit? I am booked in May for PER-MEL return and also purchased the economy X seats. My husbands flight was paid for separately with the same Amex card. We were initially traveling to go to the footy so would be keen to know if my free flight benefit will be turned into a credit amount so we could potentially travel to somewhere other than Melbourne later in the year? The card has also been cancelled since booking but I am fairly confident this won't have any impact. Thanks in advance for any help.

So just received the call from Amex. Travel credit needs to be booked of end of 2020 for travel until end of 2021 (I think).

However, I don't want a travel credit. I want my money back. How is it legal for Qantas to not refund the money when they're not providing the promised service?

Slightly off-topic, but Amex Travel have just cancelled a travel credit booking for me. I'm really pleased as they are meant to be non-refundable. I used the online chat through the Amex Travel page (thanks for this tip, AFF members). It was a one night booking for Richmond, Virginia (USA) - mid July. They will refund my $200 travel credit plus the balance I had paid on my card. There was a warning that due to increased workloads it could take up to 8 week to process, but I don't mind as I had already written this one off in my mind, so getting the travel credit and $$$ back is a bonus. It just goes to show - it NEVER hurts to ask :)

Any recent experiences with this since Qantas have changed their rules last week?

I have 2 bookings around $1200ea using the $450 Travel credits/cash, both for other people (bookings are for friends going to NY with MrsMac, they weren’t sold to strangers). I’d love a refund but will be happy with return of Travel credits. If they just offer a voucher and it has to be used by the same person who holds the booking it will be almost useless to us unless USA gets their act together. MrsMacs flight was paid using Webjet GCs so that will be another disaster when the flight is eventually cancelled.

Has anyone received a refund for travel booked through Amex yet? Had a flight put through for refund end of March and it's yet to come through.

I paid for some excursions using cash, points and a travel credit. The refund of the points and cash component has come through, but haven't received a replacement travel credit yet.

I finally received a refuind, two months later. I also only received the cash component back, and not the Amex travel credit. The person who processed the cancellation on the phone did mention I would get the credit back so we'll have to see.

I received a call/email today that August flights have been cancelled. I will receive a refund of cash and travel credits restored with a 12 month expiry from when they are restored. Expected to be a 12 week wait, which works for me as I am in no hurry to start the 12 month clock on the travel credits.

I did end up getting the travel credit back as well.

They told me I'd be getting mine back too, when it was cancelled towards the end of March, but the travel credit hasn't reappeared yet, looks like I'll have to follow it up.

Tossing up whether to cancel our bookings and request refunds. Our BNE-ADL flights in October have changed again. Booked with $450 credit. The first time they changed AMEX contact me and we changed to the next day at no cost.

Not sure why I was even looking on the app but saw our flight to ADL had gone from 7:10 dep to 12:15 then checked the return and it had gone from 16:10 dep to 06:30. They are the only direct QF flights on each day so from an option perspective it's either them, J* indirect flights, or nothing.

I'm annoyed that we've been rebooked without contacting us and glad we haven't booked accom in McLaren Vale like we were going to.

Annoying, for sure. Perhaps these flights were cancelled due to poor booking numbers. Not many wanting to fly.

Could be. There was already only a single BNE-ADL-BNE non-stopper each day. They've just changed the times. Far worse things happening in the world...

I used my travel credit to book a flight for a family member SYD-PER to travel last week:
  • rescheduled to bring it forward early to avoid travel restrictions as the northern beaches outbreak started, no fees charged
  • QF cancelled the flight and booked her on a subsequent one, as the new border/self-quarantine restrictions came in
  • AMEX Travel phoned me the afternoon before the new flight and offered to cancel the booking without penalties and issue a new credit voucher - done nice and easy! They even recommended holding off cancelling the return flight and just waiting until QF change their scheduling again
Loved the proactive action on their behalf, can't fault the service I must say.
