Cancelling award tix with AA

In case anyone needs to cancel award tics booked with AA miles, you need to call them to manually do it. Otherwise you may not get your miles back into your account.

I went online and cancelled my award booking as that was available on the website but didn't see the miles returned to my account for 6 days (it should be fairly immediate if done properly). Only when I called was I told that award booking cancellations need to be done over the phone.

Lucky their call centre is competent!

Yes I had the same issue. Had to call AA after cancellation to get miles and taxes refunded. Not sure why that is the case. But at least their call centre is quick to reach.

I've cancelled 3 or 4 award flights with AA in the last month with everything refunded normally.

I recently changed an award by calling AA (Australian number) and there was no charge so I believe there is also no charge to cancel. (I changed date and routing on an EY itinerary).

I recently experienced this issue with a QF flight I had booked as an AA award. The awards agent who helped me told me that the refunds are often not automatic with partner flights, and require manual processing by AA.
