Hey guys I am new here and would really appreciate your help.

I booked a classic reward flight with my QFF points for next year but now need to cancel

1. what are the cancellation fees?
2. will the carrier fees/charges get refunded to me?
3. How quickly will the points be refunded into my QFF account?

many thanks

6000 points per person to cancel. Everything will be refunded to you. Depending on the itinerary, refunding can take some time. For tickets leaving Australia, it should be fairly quick however.

According to Pointhacks, its now 6000 QFF thats taken as a cancellation fee, so "ideally" they refund the unused points, less the 6000 points.
Lucky me, I have not had to cancel a QF award booking.
They should refund taxes not utilised, most airlines will do this.
As for speed, QF work at their own speed, nothing is the same.
Also, though they want you to do it all online, you can try and see, but might have to phone them up, and you might not get to speak with their Aust call centre.
Best of luck anyway.

thanks for the replies :)

I am currently booked in to fly BNE to FRA on Cathay in J via HKG, was thinking to change to EK via DBX in F on a different date, is that a change or do I have to cancel and rebook? Thanks

That's a cancel and rebook.

Cancel and rebook. You can't change. You also have to wait for the points to get back into your account. 0-21 days (I've done two recently. First one I was told 14-21 days and had to chase them after 21 days, 2nd points were back within 48hours).
The SMs service is probably the easiest way to cancel them if you don't want to sit on hold forever..as you can't cancel award flights iwth other carriers online

Why can't it be changed?
They're both classic awards, the CX one is a "Partner classic" and the EK one is a "Qantas classic".

13.3.3 A Classic Flight Reward cannot be rebooked as, or changed into, a Points Plus Pay - Flight. A Points Plus Pay - Flight cannot be rebooked as, or changed into, a Classic Flight Reward.

I don't have experience in changing "Partner classic" to "Qantas classic", but have changed both partner and Qantas classic awards to oneworld awards (as many on the discussion thread have done).

They're still classic awards - not sure what the prohibiting rule would be.

Changing airline/route requires rebooking. Only date/COS changes do not.

... unless you have sufficient points remaining in your account to cover new bookings of course, then no waiting for recredit

Thanks for all the replies yeah, I think I am gonna have to borrow some points off my brother to book first then cancel my original flight to make sure I don’t miss out

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

Odd.
I've done both (changed airline and route) with only a 5k change fee and not a cancel/rebook.

OP, origin and destination are the same. If you can find award availability no harm in ringing and trying. That way you won't have to worry about getting more points.
The worst they can do is say no.

I would call qantas and first out, ask for a change. Only cancel if they tell you it's necessary.

Changing airline and routes can be done as a change to the existing booking - I've done it many times including swapping QF for EK, swapping SYD-PER-SIN for MEL-SIN, changing BA for AA, and changing transit hubs in the USA. All of those have been processed as a change, not a cancellation and rebook.

I agree with kangol - can't see why a cancellation is necessary?

I also agree with @Kangol and @MEL_Traveller you should be able change your existing booking. I have done this a few times before and also last weekend for one of my +1’s bookings, changed the carrier, start point, route and end point. Also depending when you made the original booking i.e. if before the QF reward changes, changing the existing booking will remain on the old rates, there are already reports on this site of this being the case. If you cancel and rebook not only are you paying the 6000 points cancellation fee you will also be be rebooked under the new and higher rates.

Also the fees and taxes will be higher when you change from CX J to EK F.

So change and cancel and rebook would be 2000 points difference in fees right?

Change = 5000 points per person. Cancel = 6000 points per person.

Change = immediate rebooking with points. Cancel = can't book until points come back.

Any difference in taxes, fees and charges would also be payable.
