My question would be - why the different treatments of a refund vs credit?
Red-e-deal tickets are not refundable and as such the fare is forfeited but the taxes which would not go to QF are returned. The credit is essentially a “change,” which are permitted but with the appropriate change free.

Did you mean to link to International al in-bound connection?
Fair question about the different treatments -either way, on the short trips, the gap is marginal. A guaranteed refund

Was heading to Melbourne for the end of the Test but not going now. It was booked while the $99 change fee was still on.

I’d NOT seen this simplified format before . Presenting it in this way makes it really easy to work through the 2 options

noting the restrictive fare conditions,

an in effect $60 credit ($159 less $99 change fee) to be used by 30 June and which retains its restrictive conditions and which is lost if a future booking isn’t made

vs

$38.84 refunded today

Wow, Qantas IT actually made a very positive enhancement here. I suspect it won't work for complex tickets but it's still good that the change fee for using the credit is put upfront, since previously I recall there was no warning about that.
