Re: Canberra question

And a word of warning for visitors, people here leap onto crossings without a sideways glance whereas a split second earlier they were seemingly just walking down the street.

True - I think everywhere has their randoms though. First day I moved to Darwin a couple were having a fight at 2pm between lanes 2 and 3 on Trower Rd (main road to the biggest shopping centre and uni in Darwin). The man had a plaster cast on his leg and a crutch. The lady was hitting him with the other crutch. Both were obviously pi$$ed.
Outside of Darwin the challenge as a driver is to avoid people who go to sleep on the road at night. It's a nice place to be when drunk. There are even adverts on TV warning people not to sleep on the road complete with jingle.

They're the people who've lived there long enough to realise that getting hit by a car may be a viable alternative to living in CBR. :)

Re: Canberra question

Rule of thumb when I lived in the PRC (Peoples' Republic of Canberra) - no heating until ANZAC. To do so would be bad luck.

Oops bad luck for me then, I had the heater on the other morning :)

My father always said don't plant tomatoes before Melbourne Cup day. And that first frost comes after Anzac Day. Mind you, I've seen some bloody cold Anzac Days!

Re: Canberra question

Although it is a bit early for autumn colour, some of the trees are very pretty already. Go for a walk along Lake Burley Griffin and you'll see some colour.
