Covid19 permitting, I’m thinking of going to Canberra to see the beautiful foliage trees. My dates would be week 1 in May. Going on average, would trees still be in foliage?
TIA

I know a woman in Canberra who takes photos of trees - these links are from her website =

I've lived in Canberra for almost 30 years and you will definitely get beautiful colours even in early May, unless you are very unlucky with strong winds knocking all the leaves off. The photo I attach was taken today in my yard - you'll notice that only the very top of the tree has started to turn colour now, so it should still have something by early May.

For future trips, or if you could change dates, Mid April-Anzac Day is usually regarded as the best time to be sure the leaves haven't blown away.

There is a huge and magnificent tree at the Canberra Institute of Technology City Campus - corner of Consitution Ave and Coranderrk St - beautiful, massive, red leaves. Also, the National Arboretum is spectacular with massed plantings of various types of trees. Plus the areas in the links suggested are good.

have a good visit

Many thanks, I live in Qld, not making accommodation until close to departure, ticket booked but if need be, it can be changed. I was there one year around Anzac Day, trees still changing.

I noticed when I was cycling by the lake today how the leaves are starting to fall in certain areas ie around by the hospice. Not in a way that I expect the trees to be bare but by early May there should be significant turn.

I'm not sure of your fitness level but have you considered hiring an E-bike as that would be a fabulous way to make your way around and would be easy to stop and take photos to your hearts content.

I don't know how fit Trishparsons is but I know you couldn't get me on any sort of bike !!! 😉

Thank you Toula, I have a favour to ask. The only reason I’m coming is to see the trees in foliage, would you mind responding again the last week in April re foliage. It would give me time to book accommodation or cancel flight. Bike is a good idea but those days are past for me.😋

@parsonstrish more than happy to do that. I usually cycle around the lake every week so if I can work out how to upload photos I can give you updates on a weekly basis as to the changes.

Oh @mrs.dr.ron you might surprise yourself. I'm late 50s, overweight and to look at me the word athlete would not be your immediate reaction. I go cycling about 3 times a week, 30km each go and absolutely adore it. However we are fortunate in Canberra that we have such a good network of cycle paths that do not require too much on road activity as I hate riding near cars. We were mountain biking today and I was throwing myself down the mountain at ridiculous speeds, well ridiculous for my age at least I'm sure the youngsters were thinking get out the way pensioner, but I absolutely loved it. Fresh air, out in nature and going way faster than my two legs will take me.

The trouble is @Toula92122 I have a lot of metal in my right leg and my ankle is held together with 3 metal plates and 14 screws, and does not bend/move like it use to. Also I have fractured my right patella twice and the ligaments holding it together !! So bike riding is definitely not on the cards 😉.

AUTUMN!

Now, that I've got that out of the way: based in The Capital region, we've got about 12 large deciduous trees in the yard and I've started the raking process already. A few have already lost 50% of their leaves but the majority are just turning yellow now. Peak yellow is generally mid April and then the reds late April to early May. I generally have to rake the yard every three days in May. 😞

You might want to check out the availability of accommodation around ANZAC Day now, as a lot of people come into Canberra for reunions. Given they were cancelled last year, there might be a big rush. It's not unusual for a lot of places to be booked out a couple of days either side of ANZAC Day.

Thanks again, the plan is book with qf points at Hyatt dates 4-8/5. I can cancel by 1/5 to retain points. As keen as I am to walk amongst the autumn foliage, if the trip happens it happens. Departure to my usual booking everything well in advance.

They're just starting to turn, but it varies a lot depending on the location and type of trees. I work in Kingston, so I'll try and take a few snaps around the office and on the way home and post them up. We're having a bit of a cold snap, and sometimes that triggers the change, although the winds are warming things up again...

I live in Kingston and agree with @kookaburra75. Over the past week or so lots of leaves have started dropping. I noticed the poplars at the Fyshwick end of the lake had a distinct yellow tinge. I haven't been too far outside of my suburb past 10 days but when I was last over Yarralumla nursery side of town some of the trees were taking on a reddish tinge.
