I was in Canberra years ago for a couple of days and don't remember much of the area. I am going down over Easter, staying at Hyatt. I will be walking around, hoping to go to city gardens and viewing trees in foilage, hopefully they will be in foilage.

My question is will there be footpaths for walking to local gardens and one of my fave mexican restaurants 'montezuma's?' I think I am wondering if Canberra will be non-pedestrian friendly like lax and staying there near the aiport. With no local knowledge, I am in the dark of access on foot and not having to worry about overpasses, etc.
TIA.

The Hyatt is certainly walking distance to parks, the lake, the galleries, Nat Library etc, but is a bit of a hike to the city eateries. My brother hoofed into Civic once and got sunburned badly - so bring your hat etc. And yes, we do have lots of footpaths in CBR now! I think Montis is long gone though. Easter will see just the start of the 'fall' colours.

CBR has nothing much in common w' LAX or Orlando where no one walks anywhere. There is a city bus every 5 mins from the Hyatt to the city (Civic). If you don't want to get a car, you'd need a taxi from the a/port.

Is there anything else you might like to know? To see what sort of eateries you may like, have a look at Trip Advisor.

You can certainly have a few lovely walks around the Parliamentary Zone (which was one of the top 100 things people like about Canberra as released today!)

I think that you'll have a much better Canberra experience without a car, to be honest. If you need to get anywhere, you're not staying far from the Civic Bus Interchange which can take you anywhere you'd like to go.

The city is very pedestrian friendly. In fact, the great tracks around the city were voted one of the top 100 things about Canberra today too!

Unless I was carrying a big suitcase, I wouldn't bother with a taxi from the airport - there are public busses from one street away from the airport to the CBD, and there are shuttle busses if need be. Although the taxi can sometimes be fun if you get to share the ride into the city with an interesting stranger.

Walk, walk, walk... on a nice day Canberra is perfectly designed to go walk about at the lake, with all the main attractions/monuments strategically scattered around it. (Although I probably wouldn't walk up to the tower on Black Mountain, if you want to see the view from there). But I would definitely recommend walking up to the National War Memorial, that way you get to see all the varied individual memorials along Anzac Pde.

There's a LOT of walkable sites around the Hyatt. You could easily spend a few days in the Parliamentary Triangle, just enjoying the parks, the lakeside walks, the gardens. Old Parliament House has some gorgeous gardens and courtyards. Lots of great cafes and a few restaurants. Buses into town go right past the door, never more than a few minutes wait. Or maybe they can lend you a bike, go a bit farther afield - a ride around the central lake, up and down Anzac Parade, it's all pretty flat and many great photo opportunities.

The Hyatt is easily the best hotel in Canberra, you'll get a lot of helpful advice from the staff, it's well located and does a great afternoon tea. Walk down to the lake behind the hotel, just a couple of hundred metres, sit on a bench and watch the sun go down over the mountains. It's all good.

And yes, I'd recommend a hat. The sun is still reasonably fierce, but the temperatures are very pleasant at the moment. Most of the year I have to keep doors and windows closed against the heat of summer or the chill of winter, but right now and for a month or so, it is gorgeous.
