Hi there,
Hoping someone can give me a quick answer. I am VA Plat flying J in Sep BNE-AUH on points. I then purchased a cash 'Y' ticket on EY
flying AUH-ATH. I think my fare type is 'V'. Can I use VA points to upgrade to J... If this is possible I assume I could do same with return IST-AUH.
Many thanks for any help.

Hi again, I have another thought. What if I join as an EY guest program, then transfer points from my Westpac Altitude to EY guest account. From that point I could do a points upgrade. If this is possible should I ring EY prior transfer to confirm availability . That's if all the above is possible. Cheers and thanks for any assistance.

That should be possible. You can also check EY availability online on their Etihad guest website without actually signing up, here: Book flights with Etihad Guest Miles

Be aware that award/upgrade (I am assuming these are the same fare buckets for EY J) is subject to change so by the time your points do come across from Westpac, the seats may/may not be there.

Hi Zainman, thanks for the tip, checked it out . 2 seats available which is short as I need 4. Thanks again for the your help. Cheers

Sometimes the EY website will only display 2 seats available at a time while there could be more. They may even release 2 additional seats once the 2 they display are picked up by someone.

OK, understood. Tell me, the 'Guest J ticket price of 28,000 miles, this the price for the J ticket outright, correct. The alternative to this is where I go into the bidding for upgrades. What I should have done was buy the J miles ticket from the very beginning... as if I cancel the Y ticket I loose a chunk of cash in penalties.

Yes that would have been a good option as award tickets are in some ways more flexible with lower fees for changes/cancellations, although unsure what EY charges for those exactly.

If your referring to penalty fees for cancelation, I can confirm that I recently cancelled a Sale J seat on Etihad which still cost me 4.4k and was slogged a massive $1200 AUS for the privilege of canceling. I was 6 months out before flying as well. I had 3 points tickets and thought there were no more, so I purchased cash ticket. Then a points tickets turns up, so I grabbed it. Anyways you live and lean.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

Interesting, I was not aware of this. Thanks

Sorry to bring up an old post,

I am new to Etihad miles, I am trying to work out the best way of accruing miles (exc. flying), I am interested in your post as I have plenty of westpac altitude points, but I was not aware that Etihad was part of the FF programs on altitude.

Were you able to transfer altitude points to Etihad guest miles?

Hi there Blingy90,
What I ended up doing was ringing VA plat desk and they did all my bookings on Etihad using my Velocity points. Was real easy.. I joined Etihad Guest, and from that I just looked up all my flights doing dummy points bookings. Once I had the ducks lined up I called VA plat desk and they booked them. Did this same scenario 3 weeks ago. BNE (new 787 Dreamliner :) AUH-CDG and the return FCO-AUH-BNE... all J seats... Hope this helps. PS: I dont think you can directly transfer to Etihad from AltitudeRewards. Only to Singapore, Malaysia, Asian miles and Velocity.
Cheers

You don't need to join EY to check availability. The link is accessible from the main page.

Hey mark,

Did you outright points buy the tickets,,, i would like to pay for a flexi or similar full fare eco and points upgrade to J for BNE to AUH.

You cannot use VA points to upgrade non-VA operated flights

Hi WethereX
I think from memory I called the VA plat desk and they booked my Y points tickets in one hit, AUH-ATH then IST-AUH. 100% VA points.

I also booked BNE-AUH-BNE J tickets from the offset. 194k return or something very close to that.
