Can I ask for bags to be checked to SYD only on CBR-SYD-SG flight?

Hi, Have an international flight coming up and want to claim TRS on an item which needs to be checked in. Unfor I am checking in from CBR where there is no TRS office. I am looking to check my bag in here in Canberra and ask for it to only be checked to Sydney? I will then recheck the bag in Sydney for the next flight once I have shown the item to the ABF officers at the TRS office in Syd? There is more than enough time for us to collect our bags and recheck them in. I tried the Qantas contact centre and after a 45 min wait, I was told - they are unsure if that can be done. Has anyone done this before successfully? The entire trip is on one booking. Thanks!

You should be fine to do that, getting bags short checked is pretty routine.
