We have an award booking from Singapore to Melbourne in economy in September which we booked several months ago guarantee a seats on a flight back to Australia ..... in the hope that we could eventually find some J class award seats to either Melb or Syd. Although I have checked availability everyday for the past three months, unfortunately this doesnt appear likely.

So, we now need to buy some seats from Melbourne to our home city in Launceston.

Does anyone know whether we can link to the Singapore - Melbourne to the Melbourne - Launceston flights?

You could, but there's no real reason to do this in advance of the day of travel. Just arrive at SIN and during check-in advise them you have an onward flight to Launceston. This might at least get your onward boarding passes issued and have you checked in for the flight. Your bags will still need to be collected on arrival in MEL and you'll have to take them to the transfer desk.
