Can anyone help me decipher this fare breakdown for a claim?

Back in March VA cancelled the return leg of my business class trip to/from the UK and are now trying to chare me a one-way fare of $6000 of the $7100 total return fare paid.

I remember each leg being charged about the same amount (i.e. about $3,500 each way) so if I'd booked one way it would have been about this much.


My E-ticket has a fare breakdown (below) and if I can decipher this I can add the info to my complaint, both with insurance and the credit-card chargeback, which was initially denied. Obviously if one is successful I'll cancel the other but right now I'm out well over $3,500 for the flight I had to buy to get home.

Can anyone assist in interpreting the various charges?

(To me,) looks like your BNE-LON fare was $2259.88 and your LON-BNE was also $2259.88. The only difference between the two legs of the trip, therefore, would be the applicable taxes and fees at either starting points of the trip. For the BNE-LON trip you were charged the applicable charges in Australia, and for LON-BNE the applicable UK charges (like the $339 APD that was charged for your trip from LON-BNE, but nothing even close to that for the BNE-LON trip).
 
If it was an involuntary cancellation imposed on you and VA declined to provide you with an alternative to get home - I’d not worry about this half fare stuff, I’d pursue VA for the full cost of your alternative arrangements.

(Just saying what I would do, not saying it will succeed easily or at all.)

There will be plenty of airline fans who will tell you airlines are within their rights to overcharge you based on fare rules ... just ignore it.:p

If VA cancelled on you and did provide you with an alternative but that wasn’t suitable, I agree - just chase half the fare assuming that is more than you’re entitled to under the EU 261.

Have you tried EU261?

I was stranded and offered no alternative by Virgin. I ended up getting home one one of the three QF2's which flew non-stop LHR-DRW then onward to SYD.

The J fare on that cost me over $8,000 one way :(

Will look at EU261 but its compounded by VA's VA and now being owned by Bain, looks like the max payout under EU261 is 510 GBP.


I've asked VA for a statement for insurance but none has arrived weeks later.

Oh of course, you’re completely right VA’s administration makes that avenue unlikely - along with my suggestion, had a bit of a brain fade there :p .

What was the operating carrier - it is better placed to give you a letter for insurance re: cancellation. And in that case wouldn’t you claim the full $8k?
