BYO to Business Lounge

About two years ago I went on a Jetstar flight from Oz to Queenstown. The customs guy had a dog (rare to see such diligence in NZ) and pulled up a young lass and asked if she had any food. She then produced an uneaten Whopper from her handbag.

1.- there is no Hungry jack´s in BNE airport (to my knowledge)
2.- No fast food tastes good once cold.
3.- If purchased immediate prior to arriving at the airport, it was still at least 4-5 hrs prior to getting off in NZ.
4.- Even the most newby or intellectually challenged traveller usually realizes that food importation can be a no-no.

I was stunned. Just one question came into my head: Why??

There is a HJs at BNE (in the dom) and it's rather famous for creating food left for 4-5 hours (or days)
Hungry Jack's investigates mouldy burger

Not in the lounge but several years ago we had a Jetstar flight HKT-SYD and took a box of KFC on board to eat
A guy a few seats away from us pulled out a six pack of beer and some sandwiches wrapped in glad wrap.

Don't you strange folks call them a Yiros there? ;)

Mrs. B and I moved from SYD to live in the country back in 2001.

Yes, "those" strange folks do call them Yiros. A kebab they are not. :(

Are you talking about the Greek version or the Turkish version? They are two different things with different names!

Turkish - usually with hommus - known as a kebab or doner kebab

Greek - with yoghurt and garlic sauce - known variously as souvlaki, yiros, giros

I was sitting with a colleague sipping Taittinger in the SYD Flounge last year when a guy came in with a Macca's brown bag containing Big Mac, box of nuggets, fries and thick shake. He proceeded to demolish the lot in 5 mins and left shortly afterwards when QF 11 was called

Oh the shame

J lounge maybe, but Int Flounge when duck soup or S&P calamari is on offer? Even a steak sandwich??

Wash it down with what ever you fancy!

Maybe they didn't think they had time?

Not that I'm advocating it...

It does seem a bit of a waste!

A souvlaki is not the same as a yeeros.

And you don't need to have either with tzatziki. ;)

Whilst souvlaki and yeeros/yiros/gyro/giros are not technically the same, they are generally used to describe the same thing, depending on which state in Australia. Now that you've mentioned, I'd be interested to try both and see what the differences are!

Also, tzatziki is what goes on the majority, from what I've seen!

I bet the eater didn't dispose of his waste packaging eh?
Probably left it for the QP staff/cleaner to take the "trash" away.
I was in the SYDd QP on Thur night, mmm, only difference was that they had that beef cheesy thing with cheese on the top. Edible, but, mmm, and to the colleague who said QP is not there to be our play place, yes, indeed, they must make a profit from mugs like me who paid $855, (I didn't pay via AFF (yet)).
The Manaia Lounge at CHC is the same, good ambience, away from the masses, but lunch was a smallish affair (basic-not as wow as the SYDi QP), just to cater for the EK flight out to SYD I guess. Didn't fill in that cardboardy comments slip though.

Souvlaki is lamb/pork pieces on a skewer. Yeeros is pieces of meat on a vertical spit.

I have never seen souvlaki and yeeros (any spelling is OK) confused anywhere. If they are confusing them they are more than likely not Greek and I am not interested in them.

I do not eat doner kebab or any kebab for that matter. Yes I am stubborn.

You might not need tzatziki, but I like it :)
I love my tzatziki home made with yoghurt, cucumbers and garlic. I generally do not eat it if I am going out anywhere. ;)

As an infrequent lounge visitor I didn't realise this was allowed, my next lounge visit will be much more fun now. Do you smuggle it in or is out in the open OK?
Some people probably are not fans of all the "fancy" food and would prefer a vegemite sandwich or a party pie.

KFC is known as the TI (Thursday Island) Passport up in the north, if you don't bring a bucket back your relatives disown you.
They bring down eskies full of turtle dugong and fish to the city and take them back full of KFC. KFC can be reheated...not as good but edible. The planes smell of it.

The poor excuse for included food on planes now, and I don't mean the wrong brand of butter or wine, will lead to everyone bringing take away and coffee/milkshakes etc onto planes like in the US.

Large boxes of Krispe Kreme donuts seem to be popular for flights out of cities to regional areas as well.

Krispy Kremes to Perth may be a thing of the past soon too, as it seems we are getting our own store.

And I have to say that sometimes I just really crave junk food so I can see how others might take it into the lounge. I always check out the local BK, Maccas and KFCs overseas to see if there's anything bizarre or interesting there! I've got a few Michelin stars and eaten in a few of the top 100 (San Pellegrino list) but occasionally you can't beat crispy fired chicken. :p

One of my greatest finds- in SIN a chicken rice box with mushrooms, gravy and popcorn chicken. Just crazy delicious.

I once had a flight delay and found out I could get a rather sizeable (in $ term) amount of food in the food court in BNE. Left the lounge and bought the biggest bag of cookies from Subway you've ever seen, and entered a sugar coma not too much later in the J lounge :D

I have brought food in before simply because I was doing so much flying at the same time that I needed a change in diet as I was tired of eating the same things over and over again.

When I think doner kebab I think beef or shawarma* even though you can get chicken, with yiros I think lamb. Also with donna I think middle east.
*not sure of the spelling

What if the J lounge had Neil Perry inspired doner kebab, for free, and the only alternative was to pay for food in the terminal.
And you were hungry?

Inquiring minds want to know!

There was a Krispy Kreme armed hold up in ADL the other day . 6 were stolen at knifepoint the first day the shop opened. Not from the shop, I think it was from a customer.

At least no more overheads (hat racks as described by EK) will be filled up with KK boxes on flights to ADL.
<Does PER have KK?>
EDIT: Umm: maybe still be on REX flights within SA.
