Thought I would see if you could only choose 1 program to buy points from USDM or ALASKA which would you go for and why ?

Is it cost, preferred destination or simply availability when redeeming ?

Would be interested in opinions..

i just purchased AS mileage less an hour ago. In my case, i travel to HK via Cathay in Nov will cost me 60k AS miles which comes to 1270 usd + tax (based on current 40% promotion and 60k points for a returned J flight with CX) . USDM on the other hand would probably cost 1692 USD (based on current promotion of 100000 miles for 1880 USD and 90000 for a returned J ticket via CX). In terms of booking via phone, the feedback from who have done this before seems to be pretty good for both programs.

Just my 2c

Depends on the destination. USDM is much better value to the US but Alaska is better for CX to Hong Kong. USDM generally has more flight options being part of OneWorld, while Alaska has limited options to Australia.

Alaska has online booking for most of their partners which is very convenient. Their call centre is also very good. USDM has to be booked on the phone and it can be a bit of a mission sometimes (operators can't find seats etc).

I've used AS miles CNS to HKG before, but using USDM better choices to Europe from the latter, so we bought 160K miles to get 2 x J HKG to CDG return, total cost was aud$3500.

Were you not able to use AS HKG - CDG on CX? As this is what we are planning to do.

If you are planning to travel in premium cabins anywhere in the next 12 months I'd be buying every type of mileage promotion.
Status and status runs are dead in the water when you can simply buy miles.

I've already saved well over $20K in the past 8 months from airfares I would have otherwise paid cash for.

Could have but USDM gives more airline choices to more destinations. We might go via NRT as JQ have flights direct from CNS on new 787 to commence out if Tokyo instead, so that is another option.
