The thing I've found that I've never seen mentioned in an article on buying luggage, and that's how well balanced they end up.

My Eagle Creek soft sided medium sized suitcase is very sturdy, and has a lifetime guarantee, but it only expands at the top end, meaning if you're trying to stuff extra stuff into it, it mostly ends up at the top, and the bag falls over if you try to stand it up. Suboptimal.
