Hi All,

If I land at Sydney and have a connection back home to BNE, can I buy DF grog and then take it on the domestic flight? I've never tried since all the "no liquids" came into force a while back.

Appreciate the help as grog cupboard is getting empty.

If your domestic flight leaves from the domestic terminal - no issues.

Things are more trickier if your second flight leaves the International terminal, I would ensure your bags are checked through to Brisbane, go through International transfers, then you should be able to buy duty free normally and board your plane. Havn't bought outbound liquids in a while in SYD, so not sure if they just attach the receipt to the bag and seal, or deliver to the plane.

If you were to clear customs in Sydney, then check back in for a domestic flight leaving the International airport, then you wouldn't be able to get the liquids past security, nor would you be able to buy them as you're a domestic customer.

The liquid rules are a nightmare.

Thanks Mal,

It is Domestic from T3 in Sydney. So I purchase in Syd before clearing customs and then carry on the bus over to T3.

Thanks for that - I'll raise a toast once i get back.:D

Also, a few things to keep in mind.

If you're overseas, most of the grog will be cheaper than Australia. Some items (eg Bundy Rum and certain wines are only available in Australia/NZ).

Watch the liquid restrictions though. Certain ports have weird issues with duty free (such as Hong Kong) where your bags are searched before boarding the plane. A lot of airports get around this by delivering duty free to you just before you board, or sealing the bag and attaching a receipt, but I'm not up with which airports are ok and which aren't etc. Things seem to change constantly.

If you really do want to buy at Arrivals, and know what you want, if you pre-order you can often get a discount. You need to pre-order 2+ days before arrival/departure though.

Try the following codes on DUTYFREE.COM AU - Duty free for Australia (selecting Sydney of course!)

SYD 100899 (No space between the SYD and numbers). $10 off a $100 or more pre-order.
QAN 102799 (No space). Same discount as above.

The SYD one is valid until the end of June IIRC, not sure about the QAN one. The QAN one came with some mailout from Qantas recently, the SYD one was on the back of a docket when shopping at SYD duty free.
