Asking on behalf of a mate. They are contemplating a oneway cruise to Hawaii and then would need to purchase an air ticket to get home. For various reasons they are not regular flyers, so no status and they are not collectors of points. I am after suggestions of the best way to go about things.
I understand some cruise companies may help with arrangements but I am not sure if it is the case for them

I just had a very quick look...on a couple of dates..and it looks like HNL-SYD is one route where one way fares are not necessarily outrageous. That IS however mainly if prepared to fly on Jetstar. (Still..given how low the base fares can be..the max bundle is still pretty cheap. In fact it looks like their version of Business is about the same price as other airlines Y fares..) ) Other airlines (HA/NZ) range from $800 to $1000..... date dependent of course...

Jetstar is the only one who will sell a one-way that's effectively half the price of a return, the others will have a premium versus return.

Seemingly also not applicable here but can be a good application of FF points.

As others have mentioned a JQ Business fare without the Max bundle seems a good idea for them. They'll get what is effectively a Premium Economy seat with food and entertainment for the same price as other Y seats.

Book early and allow at least a day after the ship proposed arrival time to cover any contingencies. Also, book early to get the cheapest fare.

Even we are braving Jetstar from Honolulu as it’s a daytime flight leaving around 9.30am and arriving around 4pm into Melbourne. Much more manageable than a night flight with no sleep.

Last year my partner and I had a row each to ourselves on this route. Of course these things vary but I found even the full flight on the way there not too bad.

So pardon my ignorance, I have never travelled on Jetstar! Doing a dummy booking it looks like it charges in $US, so is it a situation where you need to use a card with no conversion fees. Is there any way of using Citi Plus card?

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.
