Hi Everyone

I am new to Australian Frequent Flyer and am after some advice. I am only a Silver Qantas Frequent Flyer. I intend to Travel to either LAX or DFW from SYD next September. I am almost 100 000 points short of being able to purchase two J class tickets and am seeking other alternatives of being able to fly J class at a reduced cost.

I was reading an AUSbt article on buying Alaskan Air Miles, especially when they have the 30 or 40 Percent bonus miles promo. It states that for approximately US $2200 I can purchase 80 thousand (40 thousand each time) Alaskan Air Miles plus bonus miles would give me the required 110 000 miles required SYD-LAX -SYD In J class with Qantas. I was reading some comments at the bottom of the article about people having trouble buying miles with non US credit cards. It seems you need a US credit Card with US billing address. Has anyone here had any success with buying Alaskan Air Miles with an Australian Credit Card?

Looking forward to your replies. Thankyou in advance

The promo period just closed. Evidently they have one or two per year, and so you will have a wait till the next (unknown when) one.

In preparation join up.

There has been a very recent thread to the buying of these points. So have a look there for info.

Award seat availability is another thing to consider. Do check before you commit to buy.

I did not have any issues purchasing Alaskan miles with Aust credit card. ( this was about two years ago, though)

You're probably better off looking for alternatives, September sees school holiday spread meaning seats in award classes are going to be harder to find than normal, and trans PAC they are not easy in the first place. Given you can book a paid J fare to LAX ex NAN for $2000 return, and earn points, I know what I would be doing:

Nadi (NAN), Fiji
Departs: Mon, 15 Sep 2014, 22:00
Los Angeles International (LAX), United States Of America
Arrives: Mon, 15 Sep 2014, 14:00
Los Angeles International (LAX), United States Of America
Departs: Mon, 29 Sep 2014, 23:30
Nadi (NAN), Fiji
Arrives: Wed, 01 Oct 2014, 05:35
1 Adult: 2,842.00 FJD
Taxes: 326.50 FJD
Total Air Fare 3,168.50 FJD
Total Payable 3,168.50 FJD

Alaska Airlines can have up to 3 promos for miles plus a percentage I believe PA, last 2 were in Aug. & Dec..

I purchased 120K of AK miles in Dec. with my CC no problems all, was a mere AUD$3100, they posted to my AK membership account within 24 hours.

Flight SYD/LAX/SYD in Y are usually OK, in J virtually impossible.

In our case using QFF points in J to Europe to USA, then 120K AK Miles JFK/YVR/HKG/CNS with stopovers one way in J (2 pax), an incredible bargain by anyones measure.

Go check the multitude of routes available HERE.

As others have said, getting 2 J QF tickets trans-pax will be almost impossible. You may wish to consider going on CX and paying slightly more miles (as there may be better availability as I know CX are an AS partner).

Otherwise you may wish to consider looking into the Lifemiles or USDM programs and doing somehting like SYD-ICN-LAX on OZ.

And miss out on awful LAX too, CX from / to HKG - Vancouver, Chicago, New York, LA with plenty of choices and shopping in HKG is still good and what fantastic city it is.

Australia to HKG in CX J used to be easily available, but seems to be much much harder these days, especially in advance.:(
