AA does similar, except you have to fly a little for their status!

With the right status run, you could probably earn Plat with them for the same amount US Airways are charging!

Since US Airways dropped Qantas as a partner, would there be any benefit to an Australia Customer to try and get status/miles (vs say the United program?)
 
There is a guy on ebay that sells elite status on many different airlines. He has all positive comments too... I bought some United system-wide upgrades off him one time.
