I am considering taking a holiday with my wife in France in Sept / Oct. The cheapest fare seems to be the Finnair / Qantas RTW combo at $6550 +Taxes on BestFlight.com.au.

I am also trying to at least requalify for silver status. The flights go via Helsinki on the way over and plan to stay a few days in HK on the way over & Sin on the way back.
I think you are allowed 5 side trips not including your turnaround. What is the concensus on the value of this fare?

Should I just save $10K on the two fares and go cattle class and try to get an upgrade with our points?

thanks for your help

Why not go BA World Traveller Plus SYD-SIN/BKK-LHR. You get a reasonably comfy seat (better than economy but not a flat sleeper in business class). Then spend the saved money on the holiday itself (accommodation, sight seeing, meals, shows etc).

And why do you want Qantas Silver status? Taking BA WT+ to London will complete the AA Platinum Challenge and get you OneWorld Sapphire status (equiv to QF Gold), plus you get 100% bonus miles on that flight and all subsequent flights. And you get lounge access for the return journey.
