Hi...I need some advice...I have to be in HKG (from SYD) the week beginning 16 July...I want to get a QFF award seat in business (I'm 6'6" so Y class is just plain cruel) but there's no availability on QF or CX

Is it worth regularly checking availability? I heard somewhere that CX dump award seats on to the market up 2 weeks before a flight.

What should I do?:(

Check regularly. Be prepared to travel on non-peak days (Tues through Thurs). Be prepared to fly indirect routing (eg via BNE, MEL, AKL or SIN).

Yes, things can change in the last few weeks before travel. but you also will need to find a way to get back home so need seats in both directions to become available.

Best to check now to see how the sale of business class is going and get a feel for what the airlines think they can sell between now and the. If there is little D class available, then they think they can sell the remaining seats for full fare and so little chance of them releasing seats into U class.

July - August each year in HK and Guangzhou are very busy business wise. Planes are always full. I estimate only a 50% change of upgrades for Plat/Golds at that time, so I doubt if an award ticket will appear.
Sorry for the bad news but HK- China is big business during their summer months. Heeps of Trade Fairs also.

Have you considered contacting QFF and putting in a request for a redemption seat. Sometimes seats materialise this way where nothing appears on the system. My experience has been that CX are far more generous with the upgrades than QF.
