Looks like the town of Mogo has been destroyed, we had many enjoyable visits there over the last 30 years, it was a nice little country town.

And I jinxed myself! Server aircon packed it in and alarms going off everywhere so now its save the server room time again.

Just call me your after hours emergency IT professional.... (disclaimer, I have zero IT credentials).

When the fires came through Canberra in February 2003, I was a shift leader at one of Australia’s largest data centres down in Tuggeranong, and it was scary stuff, we had UPS, if we needed to do an emergency shutdown but it hadn’t really been tested under those sort of circumstances.
The fires came within a couple of hundred metres from us, the other large data centre down there, Centrelink shut down and had flames up to their westerly walls. We managed to stay alive and did all our normal Saturday night processing, got to keep those doctors paid, not to mention the pbs!.

The boss was at home on the roof with a hose, fortunately the fire was stopped about 500 metres from our house. But anyway YMMV.

I look at my kids and their friends and there is still community feeling and caring. There is no doubt that social media and the internet promotes narcissism but I think people are still ok under it.

We are in Melb. I was in bed by 9.15 and briefly got up to watch fireworks out the hotel room window at midnight. Obviously my staying power has up and left.
so sorry to hear of your friend down Mogo way Cossie. I remember you mentioning her husband’s death. Life can be sh!te sometimes. Hope her place does survive.

If you are heading back today then be prepared for bad smoke AQI is 2649 where we are, as opposed to 140 yesterday morning.

I thought we were bad with an AQI of 3900, but Monash (which would be RogerKambah and Cossie territory), is over 5000. .

edit : I can’t even begin to imagine what the smoke must be like in the various bushfire areas. Canberra is now the city with the worst air quality in the world - what must it be like in the fire zones?

So I managed to track down an AQI for Batemans Bay (where the recent fires were). On the international scale Canberra is sitting with an AQI of 580 (worse than Delhi). Batemans Bay has an AQI of 999.

Im constantly cleaning bench tops ect as theres always a thin layer of dust (ash?) now.

Our CS lead seems to be out of ***s to give, her response; "Have you seen the news, half the country is on fire which includes road closures".

Don’t know. We are still running the fan on the aircon which seems to help, but the whole house does feel a bit dusty. Our solar panel generation is down about 25% - a combination of smoke obscuring the sun and dusty panels, but there is no point in getting them cleaned.

My main concern is for Ms FM. Pregnant women are supposed to relocate out of the smoke but that’s easier said than done. She is trying to stay indoors and run the aircon.
