Looks like the town of Mogo has been destroyed, we had many enjoyable visits there over the last 30 years, it was a nice little country town. :(

Meanwhile in our southern state, where I have been reliably informed that they do have bush fires, not good news either:

Possibly deliberate, ****holes........

The coast is in a bad way - Mr FM was talking to his fish and oyster people at Epic markets in early December and they reckoned the fires were just going to keep on burning all the way down - looks like they were right. :(

most Australians are feeling empathy for those affected - it used to be the Australian way.

I would like to agree with you, but these days the narcissists are taking over, it’s all selfie sticks and look at me, look at me, aren’t I wonderful?".......

It’s a real shame that some on here seemingly want to trivialise the fires down the south coast of NSW and into Victoria, but I guess YMMV.

And I jinxed myself! Server aircon packed it in and alarms going off everywhere so now its save the server room time again.

Just call me your after hours emergency IT professional.... (disclaimer, I have zero IT credentials).

When the fires came through Canberra in February 2003, I was a shift leader at one of Australia’s largest data centres down in Tuggeranong, and it was scary stuff, we had UPS, if we needed to do an emergency shutdown but it hadn’t really been tested under those sort of circumstances.
The fires came within a couple of hundred metres from us, the other large data centre down there, Centrelink shut down and had flames up to their westerly walls. We managed to stay alive and did all our normal Saturday night processing, got to keep those doctors paid, not to mention the pbs!. :)

The boss was at home on the roof with a hose, fortunately the fire was stopped about 500 metres from our house. But anyway YMMV.

I look at my kids and their friends and there is still community feeling and caring. There is no doubt that social media and the internet promotes narcissism but I think people are still ok under it.

yes it’s been a bit odd, but takes all types really.

We are in Melb. I was in bed by 9.15 and briefly got up to watch fireworks out the hotel room window at midnight. Obviously my staying power has up and left.
so sorry to hear of your friend down Mogo way Cossie. I remember you mentioning her husband’s death. Life can be sh!te sometimes. Hope her place does survive.
If you are heading back today then be prepared for bad smoke AQI is 2649 where we are, as opposed to 140 yesterday morning.280137F2-46CB-4973-85ED-2583A1DBFFD3.jpeg

Are we still thinking that humans are responsible for the current climatic conditions and the end users need to pay for any reforms while the greedy corporations continue to thrive?

We've been around for ~6,000 years and we think we know everything including climate cycles which have really only been recorded the past couple of hundred years.

John, there are two threads on the subject of climate change both of which have been fairly controversial.

I thought we were bad with an AQI of 3900, but Monash (which would be RogerKambah and Cossie territory), is over 5000. :(.

edit : I can’t even begin to imagine what the smoke must be like in the various bushfire areas. Canberra is now the city with the worst air quality in the world - what must it be like in the fire zones?
So I managed to track down an AQI for Batemans Bay (where the recent fires were). On the international scale Canberra is sitting with an AQI of 580 (worse than Delhi). Batemans Bay has an AQI of 999. :(

Was talking to hubby about an air purifier this morning. Is it worth it?

Im constantly cleaning bench tops ect as theres always a thin layer of dust (ash?) now.

Canberra News :)

Australia Post has suspended deliveries in Canberra

most reserves, outdoor pools closed

coughington Green, Questacon and National Museum will decide on a daily basis whether to open or not

Canberra Hospital has confirmed some MRI machines not working due to smoke.

edit - tried to buy some masks today as Mr FMs one for spray painting is a bit clunky to use when watering the petunias etc, but not one to be found :)

Our customer service team is receiving phone calls, asking where our deliveries are.

Our CS lead seems to be out of ***s to give, her response; "Have you seen the news, half the country is on fire which includes road closures".

Don’t know. We are still running the fan on the aircon which seems to help, but the whole house does feel a bit dusty. Our solar panel generation is down about 25% - a combination of smoke obscuring the sun and dusty panels, but there is no point in getting them cleaned.

My main concern is for Ms FM. Pregnant women are supposed to relocate out of the smoke but that’s easier said than done. She is trying to stay indoors and run the aircon.

Finally heard from our friend down the coast, she and her cats are ok, said she never ever wants to go through that again.....

meanwhile some interesting bits and pieces here, just keep scrolling down. :)

even J.H. Is getting stuck in scomo. :)

Think I'll have to start supporting The Chaser!

This is what tgh links = from a woman on board the Silver Muse cruise ship =

"At 11am today we are approaching Mallacoota, where over 4000 people were evacuated to the beach due to terrible bushfires, most are still waiting to rescued by Australian Navy, this is the view we have from Silver Muse enroute to Sydney...Our Captain advises we cannot change our route as this smoke now reaches over the Tasman to New Zealand "
