Reading the Herald Sun yesterday, Ryan Air (part backer of Tiger) notes that are going to charge
1 pound to use the toilets....8 days past April fools day and it is the second time this issue has been raised, so perhaps there may be some truth to the article, not that the media tend to bend the truth any......... and we read today, Tiger not ruling out charging for "carry on".......and I guess why wouldn't you....... it is like the mongrel banks who for years rid themselves of staff, pushed you out to the electronic world with every conceivable card and when you wher totally immersed..................bang, in came the charges for everything and anything........so why not carry ons...... carry on is the way to go they say, every fare advertised is for carry on so........ money is on that by mid/late this year, fee for carry on will be the norm.........only question is which brave fool will be the first to do it...........money is on.................... ?

Well if Tiger were to introduce a fee for carry on then I doubt they would be much cheaper than other carriers. Tiger has risen nearly everything over the last few months, mostly goes unnoticed. List of Tiger's fees that have jumped over the last few months:
-15kg Baggage fee now $15 from $10
-Convenience fee jumped $1 to $6
-Airport counter luggage fee now $50 from $25
-Seat selector fee now $7 from $5
-Change fees has risen

And how long until TT follows ryanair and charges for their Webcheckin (carry on only), or make them join the queue like everyone else. Probably another $5 sitting right there.

Convenience fee?

What a crock.

Dont forget the staff are on commission for those airport fees, a good incentive not to turn a blind eye and something that should really be reported!

this is where the travelling public get dazzled by the lights......... the cheap seat lights.......
when you sit down and do your sums "properly", TT is not that much cheaper than the like sof JQ, DJ or infact QF.......so why would one put themselves thru the sorts of torture people do to think they are saving a dollar.......
the carry on charge........
their main competitor is JQ and do we really all think that QF will lie down and let TT make inroads into their market?? not on your life!!
the charges, a part move to Avalon etc etc ....why would you bother when it is all at Tullamarine already with the other carriers

From experience LCCs are not always the cheapest (once you add up all the fees) and offer poor schedules. They are certainly not very reliable.

Having said that I have this itch to try out Air Asia and Tiger in SE Asia as they are by far the cheapest on some routes that I am due to fly in the not too distant future.

I've flown AK dozens of times, and they've had a few flight time changes but have always been on time. My BKI-KUL flight last week was the worst one - got an SMS at 4am advising my 7:30am had been moved to 9:35am (woohoo, sleep in!). BUT yesterday I came home to a RM200 voucher in my email account - the flight only cost RM50 or so!

That's the thing... They (mostly) don't say they are the cheapest, they say they simply unbundle everything from the fare... If you fly with an LCC and get everything from the hot meal to the ear phones the price is very similar to their full service counterparts. (Which would have given you the hot meal and ear phones for "free")

Which is why this is a very personal decision to make. It is a pity that the great unwashed often do not get to see the pros and cons before booking.

JohnK, you are a masochis_ at heart :!:

Possibly but there is really very little choice. It is either paying over inflated prices for latest CX specials (not really so special anymore) or go with LCC and save money for a rainy day. If the saving is significant it may be worth the risk.

But just in case I have a flexible booking on a canoe to get from TPE to BKK....

JohnK, what risk are you referring, the one that you hope they haven't unbundled the maintenance as well as the fare structure.

From what I read in the industry (Flying Safe, Flying Blind is an eye opener) not all airlines are created equal and LCC do more than unbundle the fare. Why use an Airbus part when I can save $25K and use a Skoda part. (yes, I have to accept all airlines have a level of bogus part infiltration)

Matt

There are minimum standards for parts for all airlines, and minimum training requirements for the crew as well, plenty of full service airlines have lost aircraft due to poor maintenance or shoddy parts, it was not long ago that the USAF admitted Air Force One had many parts whose origin could not be traced.

Scheduling. Air Asia only has 1 flight a day TPE-BKK and any delays/cancellations could mean being stuck in TPE until the next day and not playing golf in Thailand.
