Question for those who know Brisbane, planning a visit in April, tossing up between staying at South Bank or near Queen Street Mall, which side would you recommend? Looking at four days during the week. I'm looking at rooms with two beds, I've narrowed the search down to the Rydges South Bank, Mantra South Bank Brisbane and the Hyatt Regency Brisbane. The budget is $2000 or less for four nights.

Rydges is good, well priced (join the program) and close to the action. Good restaurant as well.

Southbank is well situated with museums, art gallery, walks through parks and more eateries than you can poke a stick at. Very well served by public transport, train, bus, ferry. Would be my first choice rather than the city.

Edit: oh and much livelier at night, a real vibe whereas the city can be ho-hum.

Southbank also gets my vote.

The new pedestrian bridge into the city is unlikely to be open by then. But if you want to go into the city the next bridge is just a few hundred metres.

Plus as @p--and--t says, plenty of public transport in that area.

Restaurants are a bit more ‘touristy’ in Southbank if that is of interest to you. I’d say better restaurants on the other side, down by the river near bridge (Note: better for Brisbane, if you are from Melbourne your assessment scale will be different).

Shopping of interest I’d stay city side as well.

If you are there for an event at the convention centre, stay Southbank for convenience.

There are some nice eateries also in South Brisbane & West End. Though, depends on what you mean by 'better'? The West End ones are popular, tasty and reasonably priced but far from being upscale or high end (which you'd then find more in the city, Newstead and Hamilton)
