Fun read. I live in Brisbane hotel and things are on crazy lockdown. Need passes just to walk down the street.

Looking down that sorry list it's obvious that BNE desperately needs some new hotels.

Perhaps, there are some notable exceptions, like Traders and Sofitel, perhaps being on top of a railway station is not a good thing.

The French and Indian PMs are staying at Sofitel.
Looks like two PMs (Brazil and Korea) are staying at Royal on the Park but no one is staying at Next and Sebel (no apparent special security around) which is interesting because they are both decent hotels in good locations.

Me too. There there are mostly police and foreign diplomats staying in my hotel but no PMs so it's not too bad.

Areas around Central Station are restricted; the doors from Central to the escalators to the Sofitel were blocked off with a restricted sign as we walked past today.

Didn't look like there was any extra security at the Rendezvous or Backpackers on Ann St ... ;)

What about the Holiday Inn? Does that still exist?

I stayed at the now Hotel Jen the weekend before G20 and found it pretty much the same as the old Traders, with two exceptions. The welcome back pieces of fruit (2) was replaced with a delicious fruit salad, and there was complimentary iced water and iced tea at reception. They are pushing for the boutique image. Really handy to me for a quick Airtrain getaway. I find it just as good as some of the five stars closer in to Queen St mall.

I stay fairly regularly at the Park Hyatt Canberra which was Obama's digs two years ago when he dropped by for a state visit.

That hotel has, I'm told, 243 rooms of which Obama's staff and, particularly, the Secret Service detail occupied 238 of them. The skeleton staff at the hotel were all prohibited from moving 15 minutes before and after the President arrived at and departed from the hotel. I was there two weeks before his visit and a number of SS agents were already in residence, installing CCTV in parts of the hotel. I can't begin to imagine the cost of such an operation, particularly considering he was in Australia (let alone Canberra) less than 24 hours.
