Brilliant trip report

I love the Australian culture, where dangerous amounts of alcohol consumption turn an ordinary person into a living legend. It strikes me that had Macabus written about getting through 8 grams of cocaine, 8 E's or 8 caps of smack between BKK and LAX, the report would have been deleted by the mods, but because it's booze, Macabus is a fully sick legend maaaaaaaaaaaaaate!!!

I think drinking 8 bottles of Dom in such a short period of time is reckless. Let's not applaud this self-destructive behavior.

I agree with you. Unfortunately flying first class doesn't guarantee having any class.

Applaud from the Merriam-Webster Online: "To express approval..."

I don't condone excessive drinking. And, I am certain crew are trained to spot visible signs of intoxication and deal with situation.

I enjoyed Macabus's narrative. Reading it from first to the last word was enjoyable which prompted me to share his TR. Drinking 8 bottles of Dom may have been fiction, for all I care.

Um let's see. The flying time is 17 hours. I assume 16 hours of drinking time. 7 standards drinks in a bottle, 56 standard drinks in total. That gives 3.5 standard drink per hour. Seems like a pretty steady rate to me. I wouldn't call it a dangerous amount of drink give the time factor Certainly nothing like the 78 standard drinks attributed to a five foot two tasmanian flying syd to lhr.

Reading the TR it was about 27 hours travel time including transfers and the trip was slow due to delayed take offs and head winds, so 56 drinks in 27 hours, not going to come close to Boonie!

I do however think it could be deemed excessive and I would not undertake such behaviour. It did seem like he was suffering from "I'm in F and need to get my monies worth".

Heck, did Macabus abstain from drinking in the NRT and SIN lounges?

In the Chapter BOTTLE #8+ of DOM. he reports:

"I was awake for about 26 hours on that trip. A .75L bottle has 5 glasses. Okay, let's assume 42 glasses of Dom over 26 hours. That's a little over 1.5 glasses per hour. Not drunk, just a nice steady Champagne glow... Plus I had lots of food, a driver to pick me up in Bangkok, and nothing to do upon arrival but spend the day at a spa".

So the denominator is 26. Hehehe...

Ok I should have actually read the TR instead of googling the flight time. 26 hours 2 standard drinks an hour = not excessive IMO and certainly not dangerous. To those who would quote stats at me to attempt to show it is dangerous I can only say that living is dangerous, 100% of all people who live will die.

It is the same as drinking 4 stubbies every 3 hours. Try that at home and you'll die of boredom.

Not that this means I condone the behavior. But there are better criticisms than "typical Australian booze culture".

I say Hear! Hear!

I still liked the narrative, fact or fiction.

Sounds like the TR was a version of what most 18-21 year olds do every weekend, just up in the air in the F cabin, and happening once, not every weekend. I would imagine doing something like this once would be low on the risk scale compared to drinking less more often, but I am no doctor. It was a good read IMHO.

Although, I came pretty close six months ago on a LX trip from LAX-ZRH-BKK in F.

When will I ever learn?

I think you are being a bit tough with this criticism NYC

This guy ate with gusto, drank steady and obviously enjoyed himself not your stereotypical Australian of which you so talk - I am also (very) slightly offended that you consider this to be Australian culture - what was your personal consumption of <insert drink here> per hour the last time you visited an establishment / restaurant / lounge / F seat? I know that mine is higher than 1.5 drinks per hour - ask anyone who attends MEL drinks  evenings!

If he had of TR'd about a drug binge - yes it would have been deleted, but until the powers that be make 2000 DOM illegal, there is no reason for any MOD to even consider removal, and to reiterate my first line of this reply, I think your criticism is a little harsh

Report also suggested that a 'tasting' at a point was organised which suggested to me other participated?

What a waste - after he had demolished 2 (or maybe 3) bottles the FAs should have started secretly serving him Jacobs creek (and kept the Dom for themselves) - he wouldn't have known the difference!

Seriously, if you are going to get sloshed, do it it with beer or cheap spirits, and save the Dom and Krug for those who will appreciate it!

huh?

It seems to me he did appreciate it...

Ok, maybe I'm just a but jealous;), would kill for even half a glass of Dom/ Krug/ Cristal right now...

Still, the guy must have a superhuman liver to be able to still properly appreciate the taste of top champers after 3 bottles - certainly my taste bud are somewhat muted by the fifth glass of St Henri!

God, i'm sick of champagne after the EK 3 hour flight to AKL. Don't know how he could've continued drinking it for that long.

Although - good on him I say - whatever floats his boat. I have to wonder what the airlines policy is on serving drunks, whether this be set at a point of consumption or just "because a pax is acting drunk"...

If I was a SQ Exec, I can't imagine I would be too impressed reading the trip report. If it did make its way to SQ Management, I can imagine that there would be some controls put in place to prevent it from happening in future....

Hmmm I don't know about that.... it was a VERY positive review of SQ F and no harm was done
