Hey all,

I'm staying at a "4 star" hotel in the Outram area in Singapore and I've gotta say the coffee and breakfast at the hotel is expensive (as is all of Singapore) and average at best.

Anyone got any places in mind that can serve up a decent breakkie and coffee in the Outram/Downtown area? Mind you i'm a Melbournian so we have expectations.

Being originally from Melbourne, I was pretty disappointed with the value for money at the more Melbourne style cafes in Singapore when I was there last month. Coffee itself was OK, but given it was 50-100% more expensive than in Melbourne, I wasn't all that impressed. I ended up mainly drinking the local style kopi instead.

There's a place called "Forty Hands" in Tiong Bahru, not too far away that is OK. Is popular, but quite pricey, as are most things with a "western" style/flavour. Failing that there are a few other places around in Tiong Bahru that are supposedly OK.

As a fellow Melbourne and that loves her coffee I say if you can't beat email join email ie go the local route and get u ourself some Kaya toast and kopi.. Yummy..

Thanks for the suggestions! I'll make sure to have the local coffee and toast tomorrow. I've finally got some free time to actually take in Singapore.

Follow the locals and you won't go wrong - western food and coffee is overpriced and generally poor in Singapore

go for the local cuisines
