Booking Star Alliance Award on NZ with KF miles - why so hard?

Newbie here, so apologies if this has been asked already, but am I doing this wrong?

It seems almost impossible to book a Star Alliance Award trip in Western Pacific on Air New Zealand from Australia (east coast). So I thought I'd ask here if I'm doing this wrong.

I transferred Velocity points to KF to be able to fly NZ to PPT (Tahiti) from either Brisbane or Sydney. The Star Alliance Western Pacific award chart is pretty good value.
NZ website will not let you search for award seats unless you have enough AirPoints already saved. So you have to search on on another Star Alliance website. Trouble is United, Air Canada and SQ websites don't show the same availability, and seats will come and go in seconds even in the same web session! Turns out NZ seems only to release award availability less than 3 months in advance, so your window for booking is pretty narrow.

Fortunately, the agents at KF are polite and helpful, but they advise that unless the award is booked on the SQ website you will pay a booking fee over the phone. Trouble is hardly any of the seats shown on other sites show up on SQ - they say that they are only "introducing" the ability to book Star Alliance flights on the SQ website. So you can't really book. So then you have to email KF with a tentative itinerary and wait about 4 days for them to reply with a yes or no. Meanwhile, availability has changed.

Does anyone have a better way to do this? Because this is a nightmare that in no way is a pleasant experience, let alone a "reward"-ing experience.

The upshot is that because plenty of seats were available on NZ from BNE to PPT, I booked a paid ticket to be sure of getting the date I wanted and booked another paid ticket on QF from PPT-SYD-CFS. In other words, I gave up. I would like to use my KF miles somehow in the Western Pacific but I'm disheartened by the experience.

What's available as an NZ award on the United website should also be available to book using KrisFlyer miles. Air NZ doesn't release much availability, though.

The Air New Zealand website is not the right place to look for KrisFlyer award availability. What's available to Airpoints members will not match what's available to book using partner airlines in any way.

Hi Matt, yes I noticed that the Air NZ website wasn't any use for booking a Star Alliance award, unfortunately. And the KF agent explained that Air NZ doesn't release all possible Airpoints awards to Star Alliance partners. So searching on the United website was my only option, and even that was unreliable. All-in-all a very disappointing introduction to the seemingly tenuous links between Star Alliance partners. Fortunately, the folks at KrisFlyer are well aware of the limitations and are as helpful as they can be under the circumstances.

I might try again in a few months time, so I'm hoping others here will be able to give me some hints for claiming Star Alliance awards seats.

It sounds like you've learned the hard way why it's not a good idea to transfer points until you've actually found an available award seat and you're ready to book.

Don't give up - seats are available from time to time. Even if you can't get BNE-AKL-PPT (for example), you might be able to get MCY-AKL-RAR or OOL-AKL-NAN etc.

Despite its limitations, the United website is the best place to look.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

Same here, i tried everyday. none available for months this year 2024.
The web site might show its available but after clicking on it, it is not, what a disappointment.
Kris flyer said there is a problem with their website, but this has been going on for years.
Never succeeded booking on the web site for years, really years. In the past , I only managed through calling Kris call center. They as mentioned have been very helpful & fab to deal with.

Managed to get one in July23 with a phone call for Apr 24.
Flight was not full !!!!!!!!!!!!!! on this trip.
They rather leave seats empty!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
