Mrs Shano and mini Shano are flying to BNE this weekend.

Although mini Shano is < 2, she travels better if she has her own seat, and not being nursed by mum or dad. As Mrs Shano is taking her solo, I thought it wise to try and get the additional seat.

The fare tables for domestic fares right down to red e-deals indicate that discounts are available for children and infants, however there is no reference to the actual discount on the QF website.

In addition, when making a booking and selecting an infant as one of the passengers, the default is to NOT allocate them a seat/ticket.

Is the only way around this to call QF telesales?

Will they waive the assited booking fee for this type of request?

Just don't put them down as an infant; if you're prepared to pay for a seat I doubt QF will tell you "Sorry, they're too young".

There used to be cheaper tickets to children, i guess ring and ask, maybe they can tell you how to book over the web if its possible, my guess that they dont sell child fares over the internet so not to run into issues with un-accompanied children.

Internationally an infant wanting a seat pays 75 % of adult fare. Domestically on a red e del anyway I think the seat costs the same no matter who is sitting in it - qantas will charge everyone the red e deal price.

Re booking fee - I tried to get phone booking fee waived because there was an infant in our party on a domestic booking I made 2 weeks ago and the woman wouldn't have a bar of it - in fact was quite rude I thought (or perhaps I am becoming more sensitive as I get older!)

I was looking at bookings last night and could find no reference to child fares.

Just thought I would call on the collective pool of wisdom from members before calling QF.

Even if selecting child instead of infant, it still shows the full adult fare.

Maybe the discounts don't apply to domestic fares?

Were you booking a separate seat for the infant?

I think you are right - perhaps if you booked a full Y fare they might give you a discount but certainly not for red e deal.

Effectivly here are no child fares for domestic Oz red e-deals.

Look here:
Children / Infants:
  • Infants (under 2 years) without a seat travel free of charge.
  • Discounts apply for infants (under 2 years) with a seat and children (2 to 11 years). Discounts are based on the fare type and the fare amount (excluding surcharges, fees and taxes) paid by the adult travelling, plus any surcharges, fees and taxes that apply. The exact total will be quoted once you have selected your flights.
  • Infants must be accompanied, with a maximum of one infant per adult travelling.
Domestic red e-deals betwixt MEL and BNE are either OSXI on NSXI. From E/F here is the relevant part of the fare rules for OSXI:
Code:
CHILDREN DISCOUNTS

FOR OSXI FARES INFANT UNDER 2 WITHOUT A SEAT - NO CHARGE MUST
BE ACCOMPANIED ON ALL FLIGHTS BY ADULT. NOTE - 1 INFANT FREE OF
CHARGE PER PAYING ADULT.

INFANT UNDER 2 WITH A SEAT - NO DISCOUNT.

ACCOMPANIED CHILD 2-11 - CHARGE 100 PERCENT OF THE FARE.
TICKETING CODE - BASE FARE CODE PLUS CH.

UNACCOMPANIED CHILD UNDER 12 - NO DISCOUNT.
The rule is effectively the same for NSXI.

As far as international fares go, it depends upon the individual fare rules.

Here's a link to the current domestic fare clue card:
Look down the bottom, as you can see, other than red e-deals (which have no discount), the other standard domestic fares have a 20% reduction.

Note that this discount is on the base fare, and none is applied to the +++ (including Fuel Fines).

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

Thanks Serfty. I was hoping that something like this was available on the QF site. Maybe it is and I just couldn't find it......

The fuel fine is the same but i think the taxes vary. I just booked an award flight for the mrs and mini to travel to KGI and the taxes were different (mini's was cheaper)

This is quite timely as my sister and her then to be 2 1/2 year old will be flying from BNE to SYD just before Chirstmas with my parents (all on their way from LCA). I am just trying to see whether a 2 1/2 year old is appropriate as a lap infant? Obviously for the long haul he will have his own seat but just wondering for the 70 mins down from BNE whether it is worth it.

Also thinking of upgrading them to J using points if we make sure we get the right tickets...

Just to clarify the terminology commonly used by many Airlines:

Infant = child under 2 years. Generally does not require a seat and may be free or a small charge (sometimes 10% of adult fare) depending on the fare. for QF, an Infant is usually free for domestic fares and 10% for international.

Child = child between 2 and 12 years of age and always requires their own seat. Price depends on the fare. Some common fares may be no discount from adult fare or may pay 75% of the adult fare.

A Child must always be accompanied by at least one paying adult fare passenger. Generally there is no limit to the number of child fares per paying adult fare.

An Infant must always be accompanied by a paying adult fare passenger and there is a limit of one infant per paying adult fare passenger.

I eneded up booking them one way award flights (the return date at this stage is unknown before you all go jumping to conclusions :p) To get a seat allocated for mini Shano I had to enter a DOB that ensured she was > 2 years old.

In the past we have never been aksed to prove how old she is (has always travelled as an "infant" before).

Reminds me of a Melbourne couple I knew who were traveling to Sydney with their young daughter some years back. Little Miss had recently turned 3 but Mum & Dad were happy to have her on their laps for free, so they carefully coached her on what she should say if asked.

Inevitably the hostie at the door of the plane took the Infant boarding pass from the child and asked her name. Came the reply - "I'm Stephanie and I'm 3, but on the plane I'm 2!"

Priceless!
