booking-in time lax

I made a conscious decision not to fly qf/aa code share out of dfw to lax on my next trip. Due to delayed flts., etc. last trip, it got a bit hairy.
I will arrive abt. 3pm on aa and due to fly back to oz. at approx. midnight on qf. What is the time allowed to book in for return flt.? When making this 'conscious' decision I thought it was good at time. But since I've remembered last time flying out of lhr booking-in time was only 3 hrs. prior to flt., so no club priviledges, etc, just sitting on part of a concrete wall watching the world gather. not one of my better decisions.

You will actually check-in for the QF LAX-SYD flight at DFW. Your bags will be tagged through to SYD and you will be given your boarding pass for the QF flight by the check-in agent at DFW. Whether the DFW-LAX flight is on a QF or AA flight number makes not difference to being checked-in for the connecting LAX-SYD flight.

Good to know that! We'll be doing similar thing ie. LAS-LAX-SYD. LAS-LAX on AA arr 4:15PM and LAX-SYD on QF departing midnight . Is this because they are both OW? What happened if the LAS-LAX is on non OW eg SWA? Can you still check in at LAS for LAX-SYD?
We are planning to tour LA for a few hours in between. As we would already have the BP in our hand, what would the latest time to be back in LAX?

thank you for answer, interesting as I thought I had read previous post I wouldn't be able to book direct from dfw. last time i did book direct through dfw but at lax qantas counter was told i had to book in there also. i thought as i was already booked in and had boarding pass, etc, I could just go on through security. do i need to go to qf counter again? i'm going to brisbane, not that this changes your information.

I doubt if you fly Southwest Airlines they will be able to check your bags through to Sydney and get your Qantas boarding passes.
I imagine that you would need to plan to arrive back at the LAX terminal at least an hour before your flight departs if you already have boarding passes although I would hesitate to leave it that late myself. Lines can be long for security screening at LAX.
It doesn't seem to me that you will have much time to tour around LA between flights even if your LAS-LAX flight is on time, I have taken the AA flight twice this year and there were significant delays both times. How do you plan to tour? If you are using a rental car you will need to take a shuttle to the rental car lot to pick up the car so I think you would be lucky to be on the road before 5pm. That means you will hit peak hour traffic in LA when the freeways slow to a crawl so getting anywhere will take you a long time. You then need to be back at the car rental lot at LAX in time to get a shuttle back to the terminal. I would allow at least 30 minutes for that.
You may have time to have a quick look around Santa Monica but don't leave it too late heading back to the airport I had to pick a friend up from LAX late last year and there was an accident on the freeway the trip took three times longer than usual.
Maybe I am overly cautious but it wouldn't be good to miss the flight.

This will work with any airline that has a "interlining" agreement with QF. I do not believe South West has such an agreement with QF, which is typical of the traditional low-cost-carrier model.

The essential thing is to have the bags checked through. This is independent of you being checked into the flight and having a boarding pass issued. The baggage checking and issuing of the board pass are two different processes. You can also check-in and collect the boarding pass after touring LA for a few hours so long as you have not had to worry about the checked luggage.

If the bags are checked through but you do not yet have boarding passes, then you should be at the check-in counter 2 hours before scheduled departure. If you have the boarding pass, then I would be aiming to be there at least 1 hour before departure.

I flew LNK-DEN-LAX-MEL last October. LNK-DEN was on UniTED, DEN-LAX on AA and LAX-MEL on QF. On check-in at LNK, luggage was checked right through to MEL. DEN-LAX and LAX-MEL BP's were collected at DEN Admirals Club. So on arrival into LAX just had to walk from T5 to TBIT, through security and then bussed it to the temporary lounge.

Ground staff at LAX even intercepted my luggage and added priority tags.

Not sure what would happen with SWA though.

Assuming you arrived into T4 (and not T5 as stated), if you have plenty of lounge time, you have the option to use the T4 lounges which are much nicer than than the temp business class lounge at TBIT. Then walk over to TBIT in time to clear security and head to the boarding gate. This is especially good option for OneWorld Emerald passengers not flying in First Class since the T4 FLounge is very nice and at TBIT you will be restricted to the temp business class lounge. There are showers, computers, food etc available at the T4 FLounge.

Oops you are indeed correct, I got my flights mixed up. Have flown LNK-DEN-LAX-MEL twice. First time was UA LNK-DEN-LAX, the second as posted above. So yes, arrived into T4 and the rest exactly as you have stated.

Better get a stronger coffee to clear the mind.......

Where are the computers in the FLounge - I had to duck out to the AC to jump on the computers there - but ended up paying for wireless internet anyway.

The computers are located in the J lounge section, but are available for use by FLoungers - you just have to slum it out with the Sapphires, QC/AC members and J passengers.

OK - that's what I did after I had sneaked into the F lounge when I wasnt technically entitled - at least next time I am at LAX I will be entitled to FLounge access finally

I seem to recall that there were showers in the TBIT interim lounge . And regarding the drink options, at least the interim lounge has free drinks, which is an improvement on the AC lounges (but not as good as the Flagship lounge of course, which has a far superior range ).

As the lounge is located externally from the main terminal building, members will be transported to the lounge via express shuttle. There were no showers last October when I used TBIT interim lounge, and from what I recall no space where they could easily add them.

Sorry, old age creeping in . There is no shower, in fact I had to use a toilet cubicle just to change in, but at least I managed to get the handicapped toilet cubicle, so it had a little room. But the drinks were free, that is not something I forget .
