Overall, I'm happy with how things turned out. I might be delusional to be happy, so I thought I'd ask the opinions of others. Plus also check my knowledge of how virgin handles changes to bookings.

I had a double status weekend trip to Cairns booked via Brissy, getting home approx. 9 pm. Choice fare as that would get be just over the line to re-qualify platinum.
Last week I got a last minute meeting for Sydney on the Monday. It made sense to get them to book me brisbane- sydney on the Sunday. So I basically throw away the last leg of the double status. Preferable to a late arrival and then early morning back at the airport.

I was going to just throw away the last leg, but yesterday decided to rebook the same Cairns -BNE flight as flex. $89 change fee for Choice - ok. The original fare was about $370 for the return. Flex was bookable online for $309. But they basically applied the entire $370 to the new flex fare. when queried I was told I have to spend the same amount or higher. So they bumped me up to whatever fare bucket was the same cost, I guess.

I thought there should be some fare difference applied to the $89 change fee. Do Virgin base the fare value on the dollar cost, or on the fare bucket. I did a dummy booking and the $309 fare is "L" and the booking has me in "L" as well.
I will earn more points, of course. But maybe I should've cancelled the return leg completely. Sent to be fare-change fee to travel bank. Then rebooked?

do I have to use the entire value towards the new fare, or should the difference have been applied towards the change fee????
