Hi guys,

My first post. I need to book a one way flight from Los Angeles to Sydney between 2nd and 5th of September.

I've searched on Qantas and the cheapest flight is on 2/9 for $1068.

When booking a return flight that flight is only $629.

Is $1068 the cheapest I'll find a one way ticket? Am I better off to use points (ie. is a return booking with points just double the number of points for a one way) on a classic award to book it if a seat is available on that date?

Is there another route I should try?

Any suggestions appreciated!

Cheers

Sam

Hi saminc, welcome to AFF! A lot of the cheaper tickets you see for long haul international are only available on a return basis; if you have the points to burn for a classic award, I'd probably look at doing that.

It's always worth alook at ITASOFTWARE when booking one-way (and return). You will still have to find an agent to book it. For 3rd September ITA is quoting $A643 and agents (Jetabroad is quoting $A659 on Air New Zealand) (Expedia $A639) (Zuji $A629). Cheapest return fares seem to be about $A1100. The Air NZ US site is quoting $US692. Hope this is helpful.

Cheers, what do you mean by worth alook at ITASOFTWARE, checking with a travel agent or can you do it online? Thanks for the AirNZ price, I had checked Expedia but the cheapest one way I got was over $1K.

The site is ITA Software
It's a good way to search a wide (but not exhaustivbe) choice of airlines. It will let you search "anywhere to anywhere" and will do searches over a month (for different departure dates) and different lengths of stay. It also covers one-way, return and multi-city trips. Once you have found the flight you want you can conatct the airline(s) or book through an agent. The site allows you to print or email your chosen itinerary with all codes for booking.

Thanks for explaining that, lots of options on there...

Zuji is showing $617 on Air New Zealand on 2 September, by far the cheapest available.
