I don't even know why they install those airbag thing'ies on planes anyway, as if it will help in a major incident. I am pretty sure that CX don't have them on their J herringbone outfits however I have seen them on their Y seats.

They are required now to meet new FAA regs in place since 2008 re seats withstanding 16g

yes - CX do have them in the coffin seats, as do VS and NZ. (CX also trialed another version with an over-shoulder arrangement like a car, but that is only on the 747s). They are required to absorb the impact as you are not travelling in a forward motion as per a normal seat. Some Y seats also have them particularly at bulkheads, or if there is some other hard surface directly in front. (and also for the reasons Markis points out above)

While there are alternatives to using air bags, such as shoulder harnesses, air bags are the solution that has found favour in addressing the regulatory requirements. Basically, there was a body of research that found that the initial impact was often survivable, and seats near obstructions, on angles or turned into beds needs additional measures to prevent death/serious injury in a survivable impact.

Wow, you learn something new each day re: airbag regulations

re: cx, i've only flown the 747 upper deck a few times, and experienced the over shoulder seat belt configuration.

I'd much prefer an over the shoulder belt than the airbag lap belt.

Forget TG bumping you out of J or F with kids on the 773, I think you would have a much bigger problem on your hands if you seriously contemplated sitting in F & having the airline "throw your wife into Y with the kids for that flight". Why don't you volunteer to throw yourself into whY & you can leave your wife in F, or better still join them in whY & travel as a family???

I would have moved anywhere they asked me to go. I asked to be moved and they said i had to call us airways. If there was F available on that flight i would have booked them we are all on F award flight regardless of the amount of miles i paid.

Quite surprised that US let this one fly when in the past their fraud division has heavily clamped down on ticketing errors from purchased DMs. Great to see AFF being able to help out and save the day effectively.

Hopefully the OP can focus on enjoying the trip as opposed to pushing for more.

MS J was The best business class compared to TG . Air Canada business class was a joke just a blanket and little more recline in the chair .the FCT is a must see and need at least 4 hours there
Im ready to book next trip after the US GS 2012 Is finished

Shayne are you doing a trip report ? going to book mine soon for next yr, thinking syd - bkk - fra / jfk dest -icn - syd

Yes eventually I took over 1000 photos of all the lounges and seats and food and menus. I went on TG MS OZ LH AC ANA NZ . For a extra 30k miles from F to J I probably wouldn't bother again. I entered the F lounges and the food is about the same in the J lounges. In CDG the J lounge is kinda in a basement and the F lounge has views of the Tarmac. I wouldn't recommend AC it was horrible even up front. LH F wasn't great either probably on par with MS J I think it must have been a old plane.

I also have been in contact with TG about this child issue and their response was that US airways was notified about the children in F/J. Notification was given soon after I made the reservation to US airways and I contacted them and their response was nothing recieved. I'm wondering why I recieved a notice from TG and other passengers have been given permission to fly on the same aircraft same route ? They are further investigating

What flight in F LH did you fly? I am doing LH F from FRA to ICN in a couple of weeks and I fear it will be on the old config.
What was MS loung like in Cairo?

I'm on the same LH 712 on July 27th I think it is. It's looking highly likely that it will be the old config... But seriously it's not the end of the world :)

the old configuration on LH is still very good. Ok the PTV screen is tiny... but for me the seat is still comfortable, and the service is outstanding (in a professional European way). The food is approaches top end restaurant quality. Sure it might not be a new suite, but the total experience is exactly what First class should be about - refined and totally personalised. Hardware aside, I think only CX beats LH for the total package.

I flew on the old LH F for sure . The tv was small the seats were wide and blue and went fully flat but nothing outstanding . On the Ana 773W in J was better much better . The food is excellent on LH F and first class better and the lounge in the FCT is worth seeing .
The lounge in cairo is small there is showers I think no hot food for breakfast just coffee tea cereal pasties juice like a continental breakfast. Wifi is good staff helpful not dirty like the loumge in BKK people everywhere and a mess . Even the beds in BKK smelly wish I had access to the F spa there .

MS was really really good staff seat food on both flights. Stars in the roof for kids and kids activity books . Also LH F kids pack good I have 3 LH F ducks you have to ask for them

For someone who asserts to get to rarely travel due to work / family / etc, have never flown in a premium cabin before, and that this is a once in a lifetime trip .... you have mightily high expectations ;) I am glad it all worked out in the end, and that you did not end up flying in economy because I could see a major complaint in the works (after all any real J/F is better than Y), probably to the point you would have wanted your points back, all travel costs back and exemplary damages :!:
