Booked J received Y cabin

Bit lost on this. You know they don't fly J but buy a J ticket anyway and expect compensation. On multi hop trips where a sector had no J option but a single ticket, my TA pointed out the obvious but it was still the most cost effective option so i took it anyway.

They DO fly J on SIN-USM-SIN route, when I checked the seatmap on expertflyer in the morning on the same day as the flight it was showing business as 2x2 seating .
When I checked 1 hour before the flight it was showing 3x3 but thought maybe this was an error.. until the plane arrived.

Thanks for the clarification. I wonder of the EF seat map showing 2x2 really means a blocked centre (perhaps even a table fitted like VA used to have, or do you know for sure it's a definite business product? When I looked, they seemed to describe it on their own website as a "premium" product but fall short of saying it's business.

When I flew to USM from SIN on the way there the business cabin was 2x2 with seats like QF domestic J and way more legroom.
The aircraft that turned up for our flight back to SIN, had 3x3 all the way through the cabin, no curtain, there is no way other than the blocked seat to differentiate the seats we sat in to actual Y, so likely an aircraft swap I guess.

I've noticed QF don't sell 'J' tickets on the BKK-USM route which is what PG have economy only, or their premier class (PE equivalent). It shows as an ! saying your flight will be economy only, so QF are doing the right thing with only selling business where it is actually business. Whereas my aircraft was swapped for whatever reason.

Ok. Seems simple enough then. You bought business on a route that flies business and for whatever reason you were swapped out for an all Y config. In my mind, there is no argument you deserved compensation, which was part given by way of a shadow and some more offered (but only after a complaint) by QF.
