Hi

I recently booked a return flight to the US. My return leg was on QF12. When selecting my seat, I noticed I could choose upper deck. So I did. I selected a seat and it was accepted. I didn't think much of it at the time because I heard QF was getting rid of first class on some flight so just assumed there was now some economy upstairs at the back of the aircraft. However, after looking back at it, the seat appears to be a PE seat. I only have PS status and QP membership.

Has this happened to anyone? If so have they been allowed to keep the seat or are you just reallocated at check in time?

Thanks, Cheers, Mike

You may be getting mistaken with the fact the refurbished A380's have a small economy section upstairs behind the PE section. I'd suggest you are just on one of the refurbished big birds.

ah yes.. Spot on. I'm still happy with that. I got the last available seat, 36F. Unless the other are blocked for OWE. I'm just a lowly QC PS now! 36F looks quite good. The aisle is extra wide next to it.

Thanks for the seat maps Serfty.

Cheers, Mike

Would you choose an aisle seat in row 32 or 71D? I have a choice between these 2 on a flight from Mel to Lax on a reconfigured A380....

I have that choice for a similar A380 flight next week (well, 80A or any seat in rows 32-34) and I am choosing to keep my 80A until OLCI due to the risk of an aircraft swap. If they switch to the old config, you will be stuck and it is very likely that someone else will have taken your 80A/K or 71D.

A bird in the hand...

Exactly my thoughts....the fear of a swap to the old configuration suggests it is best to lock in 71D for now :)

I have booked a very cheap SYD-SIN flight and it would appear I can pre-allocate PE seat on the 747. Hope the scheduled aircraft remains the same.

I have never had this offered on the A380's as I believe this mainly happens on US routes on that aircraft.

If you were really paranoid, you could look up (in the case of MEL) the aircraft rego of the inbound QF10 and QF94 to determine their respective config and then make a selection based on that.

Does anyone know any reliable website that gives you that info in real time?

Or would the next best thing be to call up QF and ask them to look at the seatmap of the already departed QF10/94 to determine the config? I'm guessing E/F may not have that option of looking at a seatmap of a flight that is in mid flight?

I believe FlightAware should have it. It's generally reliable too.

FlightAware only tells you if it's a 388/744 etc - not the particular config.
The Qantas Source does tell you, however after the flight has occurred.
Same with Flightradar24 - which appears to have the dates mixed up...

After reading this and seeing that 71D was available, I've decided to move to 71D. I thought it would be a bit nicer in a section with fewer economy seats and on the upper deck. But as you say, if they swap the aircraft for any reason, the upper deck opion may not be available. Plus, I don't get any extra legroom upstairs. 71D seems to be the choice for most AFF travelling in economy on the A380. That's a good enough reason for me!
Cheers and thanks, Mike

Just for the record:
My son (QF SG) travelled in 36F before Xmas & had problems ("the worst seat").
Apparently there's no exit on the 36D side (partitioned off) so two people must exit past you. There's also a lot of ongoing disturbance from the service area (& toilet) behind as there's only one aisle accessing (probably why it's wider).
