I'm looking at booking premium SYD-LAX with this [VA discount] code as it won't let me book to JFK (as needs to be on VA metal etc).

If I book the internal flights separately through delta, there is no way to check in from JFK-SYD is there and have my luggage go the whole way.

Return flight would arrive at LAX at 9.11pm and VA2 is 11.20pm departure. I assume this would cut it close in picking up baggage and then rushing to check in? I guess I could book earlier flights but wasn't sure if there were any other options with this flight.

I’ve found both delta and va great at checking thru to each other’s flights on separate tickets. delta even has a policy on it.

Delta Confirms Through-Check Baggage Policy
Well that covers the return assuming MCT is met at LAX.

As for the outbound, you need to pick up at LAX before customs anyway - just need to make sure you have enough time to get to T3 check-in.

It does meet MCT, being 90 minutes:

Thank you to whoever separated this into a new thread.

This is all very helpful and promising.

I think on the way there I would have a few hours, it was the way back that would have been tight.

So the way I read it is I ask Delta to check my luggage through as I have a ticket on a partner airline.

Do I check-in for my VA2 flight there or when I get to LAX? (Is that even possible?)

Isn't this where a good travel agent comes in so they can book the fares you want on a single PNR?

Good point, I have gotten so used to doing my own bookings that I haven't used one for some time. I will try my luck but unfortunately I don't know of any that I would trust. Nothing to lose though. Thanks

Maybe not when using the discount code ...

Yep, now luck with travel agent. But I did realise that you can now check in online 24 hours before you take off (been a while since I travelled international)
