book amex hotel using plat travel credit then cancel hotel do you loose the travel credit?

I need to change the travel date for a hotel booking I booked with the credit, looks like most it has been fine but @zzap post has concerned me.

If I cancel and rebook, what happens to the credit will influence my decision. I want to confirm is the credit clawed back now or is it still as before where, the credit I received as a statement credit has been used, but they won’t claw it back/ refund my booking minus the credit?

All I can say is that its kind of weird since my cancel date was after @zzap and it worked for me. I did deliberately wait until I was in a new statement period though, as I thought it possible they may try and match up cancellations immediately after booking.

I have never had this happen, but:

As per terms and conditions: "If your booking is cancelled, and your Travel Credit has already been used and associated statement credit applied to your account, you will forfeit your annual Travel Credit benefit and American Express may reverse the statement credits issued. You need to be able to spend on the Card to access the Travel Credit benefit and it should be credited to your Card Account within 3 business days but may take up to 30 days. Your account must be in good standing and you must have paid the annual fee and minimum payment by the due date. If you cancel your Card, change your rewards program or Card type, you will no longer be eligible for the Travel Credit."

That means:
1. Once used credit is forfeited (used).

2. Amex 'may' (please note, not 'will') reverse the credits issued - this implies this may be at their discretion and based on circumstances of the case.

If you have to cancel, I would suggest you call them and discuss. Every case would be different.
