Not sure if this matters but there's also Pointshound which earns a decent rate into a select of FF programs (AAdvantage being one of them earning about 3x bonus). If you join through https://www.pointshound.com/expertflyer you get upgraded to tier 2 (~4x bonus) and a bonus 500 miles on the first booking. Not bad specially if your booking is under $350.

Plus I think you'll still get the AMEX 2x bonus. ;)

Edy, Rule #1., you should disclose if you will earn points from people signing up using the link you provided.

It appears that most or all the FF schemes listed on Pointshound are US based so wondering how the average Aussie will be able to make use of this? Not saying we can't, just need it explained.

I earn nothing out of sharing this, people signing up, and booking through them.

AAdvantage, Etihad Guest and Virgin America Elevate represent excellent value for us down under. Through AA you could book a fair bit of good value rewards on QF, CX, BA, and EY out of AU. While for VX Elevate, you could book good value redemptions in business on VA.

Thanks for the explanation re points usage.

"I earn nothing out of sharing this".....You better get with the program! I just signed up. If I provide the link https://www.pointshound.com/heywud , and someone signs up using it then in Pointshound's words "You and your friend will each earn 250 points with your friend's first reservation booked on PointsHound." That sounds pretty reasonable.

An observation. Conducting a search of hotels in Frankfurt only produced 2 hotels but these were in the north of Germany near the Polish border, not near Frankfurt at all. Perhaps until the site gains acceptance it may be more useful in say US than in Europe.

Correction. There are lots of hotels in Germany and indeed Europe generally that are available through Pointshound. My error, I chose a destination of Frankfurt and guess what? There are more than a couple in Germany with variations on the name.

Edit: Apologies for thread creep.

Make sure you choose AUD when searching and double check on the finalisation page...

Don't hold your breath - in the past it has taken at least 8 weeks for the points. Put it in your diary!!

Can confirm they have charged in AUD with no FX commission fee. Excellent (Expedia.com.au is the only other site I know will always charge in the local currency of the webpage). Can confirm the standard double points have posted...I wait with baited breath for 10x

Are the 10 bonus points only applicable on bookings made that are paid in full at the time of booking? Eg if one were to book a hotel stay for September that had no deposit and the card wasn't charged until check-in, would points be earned?

Their T&C says at time of booking. See Point No2 for that. I loathe prepaying and who knows, cough happens and I may need to cancel.
Points Hound may be the way to go even if I earn lesser points.

Anyway, here's the T&C:

  1. HotelClub: Offer commences 1 April 2013 and ends 30 June 2013. Membership Rewards Bonus Point offer is valid only for bookings made at Hotelsand for purchases made in Australia and charged to an eligible Australian dollar American Express Card. Where a booking is cancelled the Bonus Points will be deducted.
  2. Where a booking is made that only requires payment of a deposit and not the full amount for the hotel booking, the Bonus Point offer will be available only on the amount of the deposit paid at the time of booking and not on the balance of the payment to be made at the hotel. This offer cannot be used in conjunction with the HotelClub Membership program. American Express Cardmembers cannot earn HotelClub member dollars for bookings made at Hotels. for which they receive American Express Membership Rewards Bonus Points.
  3. American Express Cardmembers cannot earn American Express Membership Rewards Bonus Points for bookings made on any other HotelClub website other than Hotels. This offer is subject to the Terms and Conditions of the Membership Rewards program available atmembershiprewards.com.au/termsandconditions and hotelclub's booking terms and conditions available at Hotels.
  4. Membership Rewards Bonus Point offers are valid for purchases made in Australia and charged to an eligible Membership Rewards enrolled Australian-dollar American Express Card. Enrolment in Membership Rewards is required (an annual fee may apply). Please allow 8 to 10 weeks for Bonus Points to be credited to your account. The Qantas American Express Card, the Qantas American Express Premium Card, the Qantas American Express Ultimate Card, David Jones American Express Cards and Cards not issued by American Express are excluded from this promotion. Offer subject to change at any time.

Here's an update on my latest purchase:
Booked 2 April (Base 2x points credited)
Stayed 15-19 April
Today 21 May (10x bonus points credited)

This can be a great deal. Got the Crown Metropol for $199. As I needed two rooms bonus received of 4,000 approx. Rate on this occasion was no more expensive then I saw elsewhere

Just made a booking using Hotelclub and didn't double check $US or $AU.

I was therefore charged in $US :( so will probably miss out on the bonus points :(

I'm pretty sure I've paid in USD before and still got the points. I did another booking yesterday in USD for a NYC hotel so hopefully they come through...

interesting, did you get per usd or aud conversion? logically should be aud (statement amount including the 3.3%)

Can I ask if you therefore got essentially 12pt/$? And if so why did you get double base points or is this no longer available?

Im looking at getting an Amex Edge card (my first Amex card) and hence the questions :)

I booked through the promotion and not completed stay at hotel as yet also forgot to check if paid in Aus dollars , also happy to refer Platinum Edge if you would like a referral.

I'm all good Rallo in regards to a referral. Did you get the double points for your initial charge or only single points?

I booked on the 27th August so I have only received base points by what I have read I won't see the bonus points for eight weeks.

Just checking as edy4eva received x2 base points which why I was curious.

I see everyone posting having success booking. I would love to but when I go through the process for 2 hotels on different times of the year (July for Malaysia and September for Lady Elliot Is.) I get a lack of availability message. I know these hotels have availability so maybe I am plain unlucky. lol. I'd love to get the bonus.

Same thing happened to me last month when I made a booking for a two week overseas stay. I knew there was availability despite the error as the main Hotelclub website would allow the selection. So I brute forced it three hours straight for the love of the points game and finally the dates I wanted opened up.
