Hmmmm, have to see what QFs thought on it are and whether it fits their strategy... If they actually have a strategy...

And does everything have to have an 8 in the model number these days??? How did we get to having new models start at ***-800?? 747-8i??? is it just because the 380 came out and everyone now associates an 8 in there somewhere as being the latest and greatest???

I would suggest its marketing as to why the number 8 is so prevalent.

OT but if you see a custom number plate with reference to 8 (one or more), you can guess what nationality that the driver is 9 times out of 10

What can the 777 do for QF that the A330 and 787 can't, other than additional capacity? The only routes I can see are South Africa and South America and unless CASA changes its rules on etops then those routes will remain the domain of the quad jet (or dropped when QF retires the 747)

In the case of the 787, the main difference with the 777 for the past how ever many years is that the 777 is real and does fly :)
Have never been a fan of A330s... dunno why. Maybe I'm not that keen on Skybed Is

Regardless of whether this new plane could do SYD-LHR non-stop, QF would need to consider if pax would actually want to board a 21-ish hour non-stop flight!!

Yes I was aware of that & hence my comment about the maths not having been done as to see whether an additional premium (in addition to the premium that we already pay to fly QF) would be required to make the QF flights commercially viable.

It always comes back to the $$$.

QF will not fly SYD-LHR non-stop

The numbers just won't stack up, a few extra hours to go via DXB and a break in the flight is pretty much the limit of what people will pay and how long you want to be locked up in a pressurized metal tube for

It doesn't matter how much further the 777-8x can go. It's still basically flying an oil tanker, with a few pax and an extra crew on board as extras.
