I am happy to see this. I hope it speeds up the process through security and eliminates the long lines caused by people who have to walk through the xray multiple times while holding up 50 behind them.

Bring it on I say

I would be happy to use this facility, although I am concerned that there may be no opt out ability. No scan/no fly seems very inflexible when hand scanners and pat downs can achieve the same result - albeit more time consuming.

I'm glad to see this introduced - happy that the units are millimetre wave, happy that they use the automated threat detection software (ie. the 'stick figure' feature), and happy that if one day I'm ever 'randomly selected', the additional screening won't be a pat down *. I'll just have to remember not to wear one of my cardigans - it has both a zip and buttons, which always seems to get the yellow box on MMW scanners overseas that run the same software!

* Somehow I'm WP and have *never* been 'randomly selected' for additional screening when departing Oz or anywhere overseas (Aus domestic ETD swabs excluded)! On top of that, when departing from LHR T3, I was in front of a sizeable group of Middle-Easterners (dressed in their standard cultural wear), and was told by one of the security staff there to "go, go, go", before hearing them say "excuse me sir, you've been randomly selected for additional screening, please step this way" to the Arab man behind me... Hopefully they won't be like that in Australia though! Not particularly fair to some people... :)

I am happy to undergo this too... I think they have it right that all bodies will appear as stick figures and I like the "no scan, no fly" policy.

There will be no opt out - there is no "may" about it.

I was just basing that on the QF webpage.

Still a proposal at this stage methinks:

While the proposed legislation allows for exemptions such as persons suffering from a serious medical condition, infants and small children and persons in wheelchairs, the Australian government is proposing a 'no opt out' policy.
